The Art of sitting down.
From our upbringing, many of us learned that we need to work hard to gain something of value. We have to study hard and do well in school for a successful job. Work hard at our occupations to be well-off in life. The Bible certainly does not disagree with that. (The Scriptures teach us to be diligent and be able to give to others)
But, the Bible teaches us something else that we do not learn from the world: the art of sitting.
At times, we must work, but at times, we must let go and wait for God to give. In churches today, some of us may wrongly think our prayers must be loud and we need to stand with our hands raised up to have our prayers heard from God. There are certainly times for that, and there are times for us to sit and receive.
When Jesus fed the hungry people, he got them to sit down. They did not have to work for the food Jesus provided. They were able to receive and enjoy it sitting down.
Let us recognize that not all gains come from our hard working. Jesus commanded us to keep the Sabbath so that we may recognize that all good things come from Him. Perhaps it is time for us to sit and receive from His gracious hands. Sit to be fed.
10“Have everyone sit down,” Jesus said to his disciples. So on the vast grassy slope, more than five thousand hungry people sat down. 11Jesus then took the barley loaves and the fish and gave thanks to God. He then gave it to the disciples to distribute to the people. Miraculously, the food multiplied, with everyone eating as much as they wanted!
