Proper use of the gift of tongues.
I hear concerns from people who are less familiar with tongues that they don’t feel as confortable in settings when others use it. The gift of tongues is a wonderful gift where children of God can freeflow when they don't know what to ask or pray about. It is a way they can leave even the contents of their prayer to God to guide and direct.
Yet, it is not a gifting to be used in public settings unless it edifies others. Paul speaks to churches that emphasize speaking in tongues to be careful.
On the other hand, like any earthly talents, when they are not used, the ability tends to wane. God gave us talents and gifts to use, but when hindered and not cultivated, it becomes a waste.
Consider a child learning to play the guitar. If the family members do not like the loud sound, they may discourage him from playing. Yet, should he be allowed to play all night, even to disturb the neighbors?
As the church, we must balance the use of the tongues. Let others practice it and have a deeper fellowship and love for the Lord through it. At the same time, let it be used for edification of others by not letting it be ezceessive, especially when among people who do not understand it.
Perhaps a better perspective may be to ask God to give wisdom and understanding so that the tongue may be interpretted and used in conjunction with prophetic gifts. That way, even people who are newer in faith can understand it and take part in what God is doing.
Even though Paul speaks against the wrong uses of the tongues in a church setting, he points out that it is a good gift that one should pursue. Yes, let's grow in our use of it, but be considerate of others and enable them to take part in the body of Christ by speaking in a common language when together. Love must always take precedence.
6My dear friends, what good is it if I come to you always speaking in tongues? But if I come with a clear revelation from God, or with insight, or with a prophecy, or with a clear teaching, I can enrich you. 16Otherwise, if you are praising God in your spirit, how could someone without the gift participate by adding his “amen” to your giving of thanks, since he doesn’t have a clue of what you’re saying? 17Your praise to God is admirable, but it does nothing to strengthen and build up others.
