Scripture Reflection by Sang Sur on Proverbs 15:1-2,22,32-33 posted June 13, 2013 - Prayer Tents

Verse 22 points to a need for people who are devoted to the Lord leading the church—the need for leadership.
Verses 32-33 points again to discipline—something that is very hard. It is to let our egos down and take the criticism either from God or others, then to accept it, then change our ways.
Yet, in the big picture of things, we know—a crazy person is someone who keeps repeating what s/he does and expects some other result each time. If we live our lives without making any changes and just living as we normally do, then there will be no change for the better.
Certainly, we'll need to know how to discern from God what is good (not just follow anyone's advice/discipline), then as we change toward the way God leads us, we'll continue to be transformed to become more like Jesus.
“Humility” is a willingness to change and that comes before we become like Jesus, or “honor” (see verse 33)
Verses 1-2 is also very hard in practice. This verse is especially hard for me because as leaders, we need to hold the passion and drive to keep things moving despite what others may say.
For example, let's suppose God wants us to do X. People are unwilling to follow—let alone people with titles (leadership). As the leader, should I be speaking gently begging the “leaders” to do something? or should I be speaking with passion (some anger, with some motivation to correct and discipline) to tell them they need to do X.
So, if this verse is saying always use gentle words, it is hard to accept. One thing that comes to mind is that gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:23, and also Colossians 3:12; 1Timothy 6:11). This is one of my struggles, asking the Lord to breakthrough and teach me how I ought to respond in times when those who should follow are resistant.
1A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. 2The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness. 22Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success. 32If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding. 33Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
