One of the concepts that stand out from today's reading is regarding our influence. In order to be a person of influence, we ought to seek good (humility and fear of the Lord), and become competent. This refers again to a recurring theme within Proverbs—do not be lazy, but be diligent.
In Christian circles, we mistaken God's grace to mean that we should not do anything because God's grace is enough. It is certainly enough! And there is no work that would draw us closer to God or please Him more. Our sacrifices and acts do not add anything to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus our Lord.
Yet, as a result of the grace we have received, Christians ought to be more diligent and seek to be a person that can add value to others. How can we be a person of value? By the grace of God, we can learn more and perhaps even build up riches (as Proverbs teach us), so that we can give away what we have.
Certainly, we cannot give what we do not have. We can only give what we have! So then, in a culture where people just want to be praised and glorified for the little they do—we, as the people who have received God's favor, shall keep growing and remain diligent so that we may serve one another. As God fills us with more, we can give it away.
Many Christians focus on the “giving away” part because that is the altruistic thing to do (which make us feel good when we do it); yet, in living for Christ, we have to focus on the first step—growing in the Lord.
I hope this encourages all of you who are reading to remain faithful to the Lord, allow Him to discipline you, and remain diligent in being obedient to His guidance for your life.
1Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold. 4True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. 29Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.
