Scripture Reflection by Sang Sur on Proverbs 30:1-2,8-9,21-32 posted June 28, 2013 - Prayer Tents

Verses 1-2. When we get depressed or lose self-confidence, this is how our prayers go. It definitely depends on the circumstances; yet, as even seen in this chapter—though we recognize our being lower than God, we should not over-emphasize our weakness, but rather, we should proclaim the greatness of our God, how He is able, and how He has always been faithful (See the following verses).
Even in our lives, as things get rough and we may lose focus, don't let the mind dwell on ourselves (our weakness, our inabilities, etc), but put that back on God for who He is.
Verse 8-9. My family's personal prayer. My wife and I discussed some stories of how after people generate some success on earth and have some time on their hands (because they don't need to work anymore for the money), their minds may open up to doing evil, even cheating on one's spouse. (This example is shown in Scriptures too with King David and Bathsheba).
We are fully aware of what riches can do to us—and we pray that we would never just become complacent, as to give Satan a foothold—but rather have just enough so that we may better serve others.
Verses 21-32. These set of verses shows that the world is not as we may see it. We may think we are strong, but we may not be; wise, but not; doing the right thing, but check your heart. In the end, we need to trust the Lord to guide us—our understanding is too limited, and we need the mighty God to walk us through.
1The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this message. I am weary, O God; I am weary and worn out, O God. 2I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense. 8First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. 9For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name. 21There are three things that make the earth tremble—no, four it cannot endure. 22a slave who becomes a king, an overbearing fool who prospers, 23a bitter woman who finally gets a husband, a servant girl who supplants her mistress. 24There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise. 25Ants—they aren’t strong, but they store up food all summer. 26Hyraxes—they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocks. 27Locusts—they have no king, but they march in formation. 28Lizards—they are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces. 29There are three things that walk with stately stride—no, four that strut about. 30the lion, king of animals, who won’t turn aside for anything, 31the strutting rooster, the male goat, a king as he leads his army. 32If you have been a fool by being proud or plotting evil, cover your mouth in shame.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
