Scripture Reflection by Sang Sur on Judges 16:17-18 posted March 22, 2024 - Prayer Tents

Why it is difficult for a believing person to marry a person who does not yet believe.
Samson was a playful guy. Just as men who love their wives joke with their women, Samson made up stories to laugh at foolish questions (he didn't know Delilah was serious, and it seemed as if she was asking so she can overpower this guy that no one could!).
Then we see Samson’s weak side. He had a secret with God, and because he loved Delilah, he is trapped between telling her and not.
A disciplined soldier must keep the nation’s secrets in complete confidence, even if it costs him his life. However, when a person is one with his wife, what should he do? What was the right solution?
Today, married couples live separately, have separate checking accounts, and rarely spend time together. That is NOT God’s design for marriage! He wanted them to enjoy unity, being one together, sharing everything!
A believing man who has an unbelieving wife can’t but give into his wife’s demands, and can fall away from having God first. If the man’s direction in life is lost, the family’s direction is lost.
In the same way, a believing woman married to an unbelieving man would lead to the same consequence. The man would lead the family toward unbelief, and the woman would likely follow.
It is not to say God can’t work through exceptions, but if nothing changes in the early part of the relationship, it may be a better idea to walk away. Both men and women must keep our love toward God foremost. It should lead to our loving others (including our spouses), but it is a sad end for those who turn away from God as a result.
17Finally, Samson shared his secret with her. “My hair has never been cut,” he confessed, “for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.” 18Delilah realized he had finally told her the truth, so she sent for the Philistine rulers. “Come back one more time,” she said, “for he has finally told me his secret.” So the Philistine rulers returned with the money in their hands.
