Verses 2-5. When I was in high school, I remember a Jehovah's Witnesses coming to my door and showing me this passage. They asked me if I felt this verse speaks truthfully about the world today. Though their version of the Bible had a different transliteration, the message was the same.
Yes, this is what we experience in the world today. I can point to capitalism, I can point to the economy, I can point to the brokenness—whatever it is, it leads to the results portrayed in this passage.
Even in the Church today, we are stuck in religion. We need the grace of God to break into our hearts and free us from these chains.
Thank God that He has provided a way for us through Jesus, His Son.
Verses 12-14. Believers will face persecution, and more so in our days within the churches. This is where we need to rely on God for His guidance. Especially, when we fight against religion, we too may become religious; that is, without love and have our hearts hardened as we may fight for which law or who is right.
Let us remain in humility, in love, and in power. Not shrinking back in our love for the people.
Verses 16-17. May God's people remain in the Word and remain steadfast in it. The Word is what centers us—the Word is God (see John 1).
2For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! 12Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. 14But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 16All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
