Giving to the Lord.
What is interesting in this passage is, the monetary value of the offerings is not specifically mentioned here. Perhaps Cain presented crops of great value, while Abel gave something that may be valued less in the world’s view. What this points to is that human-recognized values are not what is important before the Lord, for God accepts the heart (Matthew 12:41-44).
So, those of us that attend church on a weekly basis . . . depending on your heart, it may be what is acceptable or unacceptable. Consider those who attend every service and is proud that they are well with God (Luke 18:9-14), and consider those who are only able to attend once a week due to other entanglements of life and truly wish to be with the Lord and give their best.
This is good news. What this means is, make sure God is your first love, your number one priority in your life. That's all.
You don't need to worry about keeping religious demands, doing what looks right in front of others—but doing what is right, doing what is pleasing to the Lord as He leads you. (This doesn't mean to skip church—it means go with a whole-hearted passion to love God and be in fellowship with His people).
Be right with God—this is where Cain failed and Abel succeeded. He will make your paths straight.
3When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. 4Abel also brought a gift—the best of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, 5but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. 6“Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? 7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
