Effective Small Groups, God needs to be there!
In these passages, we read about a time when there were less people who could hear (commune with, speak with) from God. Even the high priest, who should be able to see (spiritually) better than others is noted as becoming blind. Yet, “the lamp of God had not yet gone out”... God was not through yet.
I think this speaks to our times. Who can hear from the Lord? Few. And God is not through with us. This certainly calls the faithful to stay close to God.
In particular, a setting where this is critical is in small groups. Many run their gatherings as usual and it may become religious or just a ritual. It is a time when the people of God can experience God together. Therefore, let us
1. Have expectation for God to show up and do miracles and bring about life transformations (internally, circumstances)
2. Pray for that Shekinah glory PRIOR to the meeting. Have you ever had a time when your day was going as usual, then you enter some place and you just want to pray and seek God. Your heart is driven with desire to give God glory. That is what happens when believers pray in advance asking the Lord for His presence at that location, at that time.
Make this a practice for coming small group meetings, and use it for missions and even when you invite people to your house, office, or meet people at coffee shops. God is not done with us. It is even through our timeline (through our lives) that God may do something amazing in part of His story (history). For that, He seeks those who can see and hear. Let us encourage one another by establishing that in our small group gatherings.
1Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the LORD by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the LORD were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon. 2One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed. 3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle near the Ark of God.
