What our wives may look to us as Men of God.
Our wives look to us for leadership in the family (and if you have not been demonstrating leadership in your house, you ought to take the lead as head of the family, c.f. Ephesians 5).
As read in previous chapters, the world was dim (people stopped hearing from God and were becoming blind). In that midst, our wives are looking to us to make that dent in the world and be different.
Here, the wife must be sad for her husband's death, but she was more saddened because the “glory of God” has left her people.
Let us keep our families holy by keeping the glory of God close and not letting it “depart” because of our lack of leadership (right thinking, and not leading the family towards good). We are called to be more, as we are children of God. This is the leadership that our wives would like to see in us.
18When the messenger mentioned what had happened to the Ark of God, Eli fell backward from his seat beside the gate. He broke his neck and died, for he was old and overweight. He had been Israel’s judge for forty years. 19Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near her time of delivery. When she heard that the Ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth. 21She named the child Ichabod (which means “Where is the glory?”), for she said, “Israel’s glory is gone.” She named him this because the Ark of God had been captured and because her father-in-law and husband were dead. 22Then she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured.”
