Question

55. Hi there ,this has been bothering me for sometime and im afraid that my salvation might be at risk because of it. So my question is; how can i love someone that goes against your values, i try to help this person but he's a bother to deal with and people expect me to be all lovey dovey with this person just because his my younger brother ,but at this point im tired of being in his company because it feels like im being unappreciated and now im thinking that its a waste of my God given time , spending time with this individual, so how would i love a person that takes advantage of me being related to them?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for the wonderful question.

Salvation is not something that is taken away when we fail to "love" others. John 3:16 says salvation is for those who believe in Jesus. If salvation was dependent on our ability to "love" others, then it would not be a gift, but something we attain (like getting paid because we accomplished some work - see Ephesians 2).

The better question may be, are you saved? How can you know if you are saved? We know when we are saved because God dwells within us and guides us.

So, in your situation, perhaps you can consider some possibilities. Do you feel that a Christian must be "lovey dovey" and do you strive to keep that because you believe that is how a Christian ought to be? Then you may be seeking salvation by your works. Another possibility is that your human nature does not want to help your brother, but God inside of you is bothering your conscience that a person of God should love his brother in this situation. If the latter is your situation, ask God to help you to love your brother. If former, perhaps we can talk further about what it means to be a Christian. (if someone closer to you is available, such as a Christian friend or a local church/pastor, you may be able to have a better conversation).

I hope that helps. Please write back if I can be of further help.

Many blessings.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
