Joshua 10

The Sun Stands Still

10Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it—as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king—and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,H139H4428H3389H8085H3588H3091H3920H5857H2763H6213H3405H4428H6213H5857H4428H3427H1391H7999H3478H71302that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.H3372H3966H1391H1419H5892H259H4467H5892H1419H5857H582H13683Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,H139H4428H3389H7971H1944H4428H2275H6502H4428H3412H3309H4428H3923H1688H4428H5700H5594"Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."H5927H5826H5221H1391H7999H3091H1121H34785Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it.H2568H4428H567H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700H622H5927H4264H2583H1391H38986And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, "Do not forsake your servants; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us."H582H1391H7971H3091H4264H1537H559H7503H3027H5650H5927H4120H3467H5826H4428H567H3427H2022H69087So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.H3091H5927H1537H5971H4421H1368H24288And the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you."H3068H559H3091H3372H5414H3027H376H5975H64409Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal.H3091H935H6597H5927H1537H391510So the LORD routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.H3068H2000H6440H3478H5221H1419H4347H1391H7291H1870H4608H1032H5221H5825H471911And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the LORD cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.H5127H6440H3478H4174H1032H3068H7993H1419H68H8064H5825H4191H7227H4191H1259H68H834H1121H3478H2026H271912Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."H1696H3091H3068H3117H3068H5414H567H6440H1121H3478H559H5869H3478H8121H1826H1391H3394H6010H35713So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.H8121H1826H3394H5975H1471H5358H341H1931H3789H5612H3477H8121H5975H2677H8064H213H935H8549H311714And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the LORD heeded the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.H3117H6440H310H3068H8085H6963H376H3068H3898H347815Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

The Amorite Kings Executed

16But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah.H2568H4428H5127H2244H4631H471917And it was told Joshua, saying, "The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah."H5046H3091H559H2568H4428H4672H2244H4631H471918So Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them.H3091H559H1556H1419H68H6310H4631H6485H582H810419"And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand."H5975H7291H310H341H2179H5414H935H5892H3068H430H5414H302720Then it happened, while Joshua and the children of Israel made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they had finished, that those who escaped entered fortified cities.H3091H1121H3478H3615H5221H3966H1419H4347H8552H8300H8277H935H4013H589221And all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah, in peace. No one moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.H5971H7725H4264H3091H4719H7965H2782H3956H376H1121H347822Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me from the cave."H559H3091H6605H6310H4631H3318H2568H4428H463123And they did so, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.H6213H3318H2568H4428H4631H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H570024So it was, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." And they drew near and put their feet on their necks.H3318H4428H3091H3091H7121H376H3478H559H7101H582H4421H1980H7126H7760H7272H6677H4428H7126H7760H7272H667725Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight."H3091H559H3372H2865H2388H553H3068H6213H341H389826And afterward Joshua struck them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging on the trees until evening.H310H3091H5221H4191H8518H2568H6086H8518H6086H615327So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and laid large stones against the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.H6256H935H8121H3091H6680H3381H6086H7993H4631H2244H7760H1419H68H4631H6310H6106H3117

Conquest of the Southland

28On that day Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them—all the people who were in it. He let none remain. He also did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3117H3091H3920H4719H5221H6310H2719H4428H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H4719H6213H4428H340529Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah; and they fought against Libnah.H3091H5674H4719H3478H3841H3898H384130And the LORD also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel; he struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword. He let none remain in it, but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3068H5414H4428H3027H3478H5221H6310H2719H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H6213H4428H340531Then Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and they encamped against it and fought against it.H3091H5674H3841H3478H3923H2583H389832And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, who took it on the second day, and struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah.H3068H5414H3923H3027H3478H3920H8145H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H6213H384133Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he left him none remaining.H2036H4428H1507H5927H5826H3923H3091H5221H5971H7604H830034From Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it and fought against it.H3923H3091H5674H5700H3478H2583H389835They took it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; all the people who were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.H3920H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H2763H3117H6213H392336So Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it.H3091H5927H5700H3478H2275H389837And they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword—its king, all its cities, and all the people who were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, but utterly destroyed it and all the people who were in it.H3920H5221H6310H2719H4428H5892H5315H7604H8300H6213H5700H2763H531538Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and they fought against it.H3091H7725H3478H1688H389839And he took it and its king and all its cities; they struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed all the people who were in it. He left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had done also to Libnah and its king.H3920H4428H5892H5221H6310H2719H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H2275H6213H1688H4428H6213H3841H442840So Joshua conquered all the land: the mountain country and the South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded.H3091H5221H776H2022H5045H8219H794H4428H7604H8300H2763H5397H3068H430H3478H668041And Joshua conquered them from Kadesh Barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon.H3091H5221H6947H5804H776H1657H139142All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.H4428H776H3091H3920H259H6471H3068H430H3478H3898H347843Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
