John 18

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

18After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.G2424G2036G5023G1831G4862G846G3101G4008G5493G2748G3699G2258G2779G1519G3739G846G1525G2532G846G31012Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G1492G5117G3754G2424G4178G4863G1563G3326G846G31013The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.G2455G3767G2983G4686G2532G5257G1537G749G2532G5330G2064G1563G3326G5322G2532G2985G2532G36964Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" he asked.G2424G3767G1492G3956G2064G1909G846G1831G2036G846G5101G22125"Jesus the Nazarene,"c they replied. "I AM he," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)G611G846G2424G3480G2424G3004G846G1473G1510G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G2476G3326G8466As Jesus said "I AM he,"c they all drew back and fell to the ground!G5613G3767G2036G846G3754G1473G1510G565G1519G3694G2532G4098G54767Once more he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" And again they replied, "Jesus the Nazarene."G3767G1905G846G3825G5101G2212G1161G2036G2424G34808"I told you that I AM he," Jesus said. "And since I am the one you want, let these others go."G2424G611G2036G5213G3754G1473G1510G1487G3767G2212G1691G863G5128G52179He did this to fulfill his own statement: "I did not lose a single one of those you have given me."cG2443G3056G4137G3739G2036G3754G1537G846G3739G1325G3427G3756G622G376210Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's slave.G3767G4613G4074G2192G3162G1670G846G2532G3817G749G1401G2532G609G846G1188G5621G1161G1401G3686G2258G312411But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?"G3767G2036G2424G4074G906G4675G3162G1519G2336G4221G3739G3962G1325G3427G4095G3378G4095G846

Jesus at the High Priest’s House

12So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.G3767G4686G2532G5506G2532G5257G2453G4815G2424G2532G1210G84613First they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that timec.G2532G520G846G520G4314G452G4412G1063G2258G3995G2533G3739G2258G749G1565G176314Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, "It's better that one man should die for the people."G1161G2533G2258G3588G4823G2453G3754G4851G1520G444G622G5228G2992

Peter’s First Denial

15Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus.G1161G4613G4074G190G2424G2532G243G3101G1161G1565G3101G2258G1110G749G2532G4897G2424G1519G833G74916Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.G1161G4074G2476G4314G2374G1854G3767G1831G243G3101G3739G2258G1110G749G2532G2036G2377G2532G1521G407417The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?" "No," he said, "I am not."G3767G3004G3814G2377G4074G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G5127G444G3101G1565G3004G1510G375618Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.G1161G1401G2532G5257G2476G4160G439G3754G2258G5592G2532G2328G1161G4074G2258G2476G3326G846G2532G2328

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.G749G3767G2065G2424G4012G846G3101G2532G4012G846G132220Jesus replied, "Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the peoplec gather. I have not spoken in secret.G2424G611G846G1473G2980G3954G2889G1473G3842G1321G1722G4864G2532G1722G2411G3699G2453G3842G4905G2532G1722G2927G2980G376221Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said."G5101G1905G3165G1905G191G5101G2980G846G2396G3778G1492G3739G1473G203622Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded.G1161G846G2036G5023G2036G1520G5257G3936G1325G4475G2424G1325G4475G2036G611G749G377923Jesus replied, "If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?"G2424G611G846G1487G2980G2560G3140G4012G2556G1161G1487G2573G5101G1194G316524Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.G452G649G846G1210G4314G2533G749

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, "You're not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "No, I am not."G1161G4613G4074G2258G2476G2532G2328G2036G3767G846G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G846G3101G1565G720G2532G2036G1510G375626But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?"G1520G1537G1401G749G5607G4773G3739G5621G4074G609G3004G1492G3756G1473G1492G4571G1722G2779G3326G84627Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.G4074G3767G720G3825G2532G2112G220G5455

Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

28Jesus' trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governorc. His accusers didn't go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn't be allowed to celebrate the Passover.G3767G71G2424G575G2533G1519G4232G1161G2258G4405G2532G846G1525G3756G1519G4232G3363G3392G235G2443G5315G395729So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, "What is your charge against this man?"G4091G3767G1831G4314G846G2532G2036G5101G2724G5342G2596G5127G44430"We wouldn't have handed him over to you if he weren't a criminal!" they retorted.G611G2532G2036G846G1508G3778G2258G1508G2555G302G3756G3860G846G3860G467131"Then take him away and judge him by your own law," Pilate told them. "Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone," the Jewish leaders replied.G3767G2036G4091G846G2983G5210G846G2532G2919G846G2596G5216G3551G2453G3767G2036G846G1832G3756G1832G2254G615G3762G61532(This fulfilled Jesus' prediction about the way he would diec.)G2443G3056G2424G4137G3739G2036G4591G4169G2288G3195G59933Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. "Are you the king of the Jews?" he asked him.G3767G4091G1525G1519G4232G3825G2532G5455G2424G2532G2036G846G1488G4771G935G245334Jesus replied, "Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?"G2424G611G846G3004G4771G5124G575G1438G2228G243G2036G4671G4012G170035"Am I a Jew?" Pilate retorted. "Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?"G4091G611G3385G1510G1473G2453G4674G1484G2532G749G3860G4571G1698G5101G416036Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world."G2424G611G1699G932G2076G3756G1537G5127G2889G1487G1699G932G2258G1537G5127G2889G302G1699G5257G75G3363G3860G3363G3860G2453G1161G3568G2076G1699G932G3756G178237Pilate said, "So you are a king?" Jesus responded, "You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true."G4091G3767G2036G846G1488G4771G935G3766G2424G611G4771G3004G3754G1473G1510G935G1519G5124G1080G1473G1080G2532G1519G5124G2064G1519G2889G2443G3140G225G3956G5607G1537G225G191G3450G545638"What is truth?" Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, "He is not guilty of any crime.G4091G3004G846G5101G2076G225G2532G2036G5124G1831G3825G4314G2453G2532G3004G846G1473G2147G1722G846G3762G15639But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this 'King of the Jews'?"G1161G5213G2076G4914G2443G630G5213G1520G1722G3957G1014G3767G630G5213G935G245340But they shouted back, "No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!" cG3767G2905G3956G3825G3004G3361G5126G235G912G1161G912G2258G3027
