Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

4Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than JohnG5613G3767G2962G1097G3754G5330G191G3754G2424G4160G2532G907G4119G3101G2228G2491 2(though Jesus himself didn't baptize them—his disciples did.)G2544G2424G846G907G3756G235G846G3101 3So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.G863G2449G2532G565G3825G1519G1056 4He had to go through Samaria on the way.G1161G1163G1330G1223G4540 5Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.G3767G2064G1519G4172G4540G3004G4965G4139G5564G3739G2384G1325G846G5207G2501 6Jacob's well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.G1161G2384G4077G2258G1563G2424G3767G2872G1537G3597G2516G3779G1909G4077G2258G5616G1623G5610 7Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Please give me a drink."G2064G1135G1537G4540G501G5204G2424G3004G846G1325G3427G4095 8He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.G1063G846G3101G565G1519G4172G2443G59G5160 9The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?"G3767G3004G1135G4542G846G4459G4771G5607G2453G154G4095G3844G1700G5607G1135G4542G1063G2453G4798G3756G4798G4541 10Jesus replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water."G2424G611G2532G2036G846G1487G1492G1431G2316G2532G5101G2076G3004G4671G1325G3427G4095G4771G302G154G846G2532G302G1325G4671G2198G5204 11"But sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket," she said, "and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?G1135G3004G846G2962G2192G3777G502G2532G5421G2076G901G4159G3767G2192G2198G5204 12And besides, do you think you're greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?"G3361G1488G4771G3187G2257G3962G2384G3739G1325G2254G5421G2532G4095G1537G846G846G2532G846G5207G2532G846G2353 13Jesus replied, "Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.G2424G611G2532G2036G846G3956G4095G1537G5127G5204G1372G3825 14But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life."G1161G3739G302G4095G1537G5204G3739G1473G1325G846G1372G1519G165G3364G1372G235G5204G3739G1325G846G1096G1722G846G4077G5204G242G1519G166G2222 15"Please, sir," the woman said, "give me this water! Then I'll never be thirsty again, and I won't have to come here to get water."G1135G3004G4314G846G2962G1325G3427G5124G5204G3363G1372G3363G3366G2064G1759G501 16"Go and get your husband," Jesus told her.G2424G3004G846G5217G5455G4675G435G2532G2064G1759 17"I don't have a husband," the woman replied. Jesus said, "You're right! You don't have a husband?G1135G611G2532G2036G2192G3756G435G2424G3004G846G2036G2573G2036G3754G2192G3756G435 18for you have had five husbands, and you aren't even married to the man you're living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!"G1063G2192G4002G435G2532G3739G2192G3568G2192G2076G3756G4675G435G5124G2046G227 19"Sir," the woman said, "you must be a prophet.G1135G3004G846G2962G2334G3754G4771G1488G4396 20So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?"G2257G3962G4352G1722G5129G3735G2532G5210G3004G3754G1722G2414G2076G5117G3699G1163G4352 21Jesus replied, "Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.G2424G3004G846G1135G4100G3427G5610G3754G2064G3753G4352G3777G1722G5129G3735G3777G1722G2414G4352G3962 22You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.G5210G4352G1492G3756G3739G1492G3739G2249G4352G3754G4991G2076G1537G2453 23But the time is coming—indeed it's here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.G235G5610G2064G2532G3568G2076G3753G228G4353G4352G3962G1722G4151G2532G225G2532G1063G3962G2212G5108G4352G846 24For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth."G2316G4151G2532G4352G846G1163G4352G1722G4151G2532G225 25The woman said, "I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."G1135G3004G846G1492G3754G3323G2064G3588G3004G5547G3752G1565G2064G312G2254G3956 26Then Jesus told her, "I AM the Messiah!"G2424G3004G846G1473G2980G4671G1510 27Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, "What do you want with her?" or "Why are you talking to her?"G2532G1909G5129G2064G846G3101G2532G2296G3754G2980G3326G1135G3305G3762G2036G5101G2212G2228G5101G2980G3326G846 28The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,G1135G3767G863G846G5201G2532G565G1519G4172G2532G3004G444 29"Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?"G1205G1492G444G3739G2036G3427G3956G3745G4160G2076G3385G3778G5547 30So the people came streaming from the village to see him.G3767G1831G1537G4172G2532G2064G4314G846 31Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, "Rabbi, eat something."G1161G1722G3342G3101G2065G846G3004G4461G5315 32But Jesus replied, "I have a kind of food you know nothing about."G1161G2036G846G1473G2192G1035G5315G3739G5210G1492G3756G1492 33"Did someone bring him food while we were gone?" the disciples asked each other.G3767G3004G3101G4314G240G5342G3387G5342G846G5315 34Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.G2424G3004G846G1699G1033G2076G2443G4160G2307G3992G3165G2532G5048G846G2041 35You know the saying, 'Four months between planting and harvest.' But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.G3004G3756G5210G3754G2076G2089G5072G2532G2064G2326G2400G3004G5213G1869G5216G3788G2532G2300G5561G3754G1526G3022G2235G4314G2326 36The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!G2532G2325G2983G3408G2532G4863G2590G1519G2222G166G2443G2532G4687G2532G2325G5463G3674 37You know the saying, 'One plants and another harvests.' And it's true.G1063G1722G5129G2076G3056G228G3754G243G2076G4687G2532G243G2325 38I sent you to harvest where you didn't plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest."G1473G649G5209G2325G3739G5210G2872G3756G2872G243G2872G2532G5210G1525G1519G846G2873

Many Samaritans Believe

39Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, "He told me everything I ever did!"G1161G4183G4541G1537G1565G4172G4100G1519G846G1223G3056G1135G3140G3754G2036G3427G3956G3745G4160 40When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days,G3767G5613G4541G2064G4314G846G2065G846G3306G3844G846G2532G3306G1563G1417G2250 41long enough for many more to hear his message and believe.G2532G4183G4119G4100G1223G846G3056 42Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world."G5037G3004G1135G3754G3765G4100G3754G1223G4674G2981G1063G191G846G2532G1492G3754G3778G2076G230G5547G4990G2889

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee.G1161G3326G1417G2250G565G1831G1564G2532G1519G1056 44He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown.G1063G2424G846G3140G3754G4396G2192G3756G5092G1722G2398G3968 45Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there.G3767G3753G2064G1519G1056G1057G1209G846G3708G3956G3739G4160G1722G2414G1722G1859G1063G846G2532G2064G1519G1859 46As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.G3767G2424G2064G3825G1519G2580G1056G3699G4160G5204G3631G2532G2258G5100G937G3739G5207G770G1722G2584 47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.G3778G191G3754G2424G2240G1537G2449G1519G1056G565G4314G846G2532G2065G846G2443G2597G2532G2390G846G5207G1063G3195G599 48Jesus asked, "Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?"G3767G2036G2424G4314G846G3362G1492G4592G2532G5059G4100G3364G4100 49The official pleaded, "Lord, please come now before my little boy dies."G937G3004G4314G846G2962G2597G4250G3450G3813G599 50Then Jesus told him, "Go back home. Your son will live!" And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.G2424G3004G846G4198G4675G5207G2198G2532G444G4100G3056G3739G2424G2036G846G2532G4198 51While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.G1161G846G2235G2597G846G1401G528G846G2532G518G3004G3754G4675G3816G2198 52He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, "Yesterday afternoon at one o'clock his fever suddenly disappeared!"G3767G4441G3844G846G5610G1722G3739G2192G2866G2532G2036G846G3754G5504G1442G5610G4446G863G846 53Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, "Your son will live." And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.G3767G3962G1097G3754G1722G1565G5610G1722G3739G2424G2036G846G3754G4675G5207G2198G2532G846G4100G2532G846G3650G3614 54This was the second miraculous sign Jesus did in Galilee after coming from Judea.G5124G3825G1208G4592G2424G4160G2064G1537G2449G1519G1056
