The Temptation of Jesus

4Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.G3985G5062G2250G3985G5259G1228G2532G1722G1565G2250G5315G3756G3762G2532G846G4931G5305G3983 3Then the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread."G2532G1228G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G2036G5129G3037G2443G1096G740 4But Jesus told him, "No! The Scriptures say, 'People do not live by bread alone.'"G2532G2424G611G4314G846G3004G1125G3754G444G2198G3756G2198G1909G740G3441G235G1909G3956G4487G2316 5Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.G2532G1228G321G846G321G1519G5308G3735G1166G846G3956G932G3625G1722G4743G5550 6"I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them," the devil said, "because they are mine to give to anyone I please.G2532G1228G2036G846G537G5026G1849G1325G4671G2532G1391G846G3754G3860G1698G2532G3739G1437G2309G1325G846 7I will give it all to you if you will worship me."G1437G4771G3767G4352G1799G3450G3956G2071G4675 8Jesus replied, "The Scriptures say, 'You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.'"G2532G2424G611G2036G846G5217G3694G3450G4567G1063G1125G4352G2962G4675G2316G2532G846G3441G3000 9Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, "If you are the Son of God, jump off!G2532G71G846G1519G2419G2532G2476G846G1909G4419G2411G2532G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G906G4572G2736G1782 10For the Scriptures say, 'He will order his angels to protect and guard you.G1063G3754G1125G1781G846G32G1781G4012G4675G1314G4571 11And they will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone.'"G2532G3754G1909G5495G142G4571G142G3379G4350G4675G4228G4314G3037 12Jesus responded, "The Scriptures also say, 'You must not test the LORD your God.'"G2532G2424G611G2036G846G3754G2046G1598G3756G1598G2962G4675G2316 13When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.G2532G1228G4931G3956G3986G868G575G846G891G2540

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit's power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.G2532G2424G5290G1722G1411G4151G1519G1056G2532G1831G5345G4012G846G2596G3650G4066 15He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.G2532G846G1321G1722G846G4864G1392G5259G3956 16When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.G2532G2064G1519G3478G3757G2258G5142G2532G2596G846G1486G2596G1525G1519G4864G1722G4521G2250G2532G450G314 17The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written.G2532G1929G846G975G4396G2268G2532G380G975G2147G5117G3757G2258G1125 18"The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,G4151G2962G1909G1691G1752G5548G3165G2097G4434G649G3165G2390G4937G2588G2784G859G164G2532G309G5185G649G1722G859G2352 19and that the time of the LORD's favor has come."G2784G1184G1763G2962 20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.G2532G4428G975G591G5257G2523G2532G3788G3956G2258G1722G4864G816G846 21Then he began to speak to them. "The Scripture you've just heard has been fulfilled this very day!"G1161G756G3004G4314G846G3754G4594G4137G3778G1124G4137G1722G5216G3775 22Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. "How can this be?" they asked. "Isn't this Joseph's son?"G2532G3956G3140G846G3140G2532G2296G1909G5485G3056G3588G1607G1537G846G4750G2532G3004G2076G3756G3778G2501G5207 23Then he said, "You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: 'Physician, heal yourself'—meaning, 'Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.'G2532G2036G4314G846G2046G3843G2046G3427G5026G3850G2395G2323G4572G3745G191G1096G1722G2584G4160G2532G5602G1722G4675G3968 24But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.G1161G2036G281G3004G5213G3754G3762G4396G2076G1184G1722G846G3968 25"Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.G1161G3004G5213G1909G225G4183G5503G2258G1722G2474G1722G2250G2243G3753G3772G2808G1909G5140G2094G2532G1803G3376G5613G3173G3042G1096G1909G3956G1093 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.G2532G4314G3762G846G3992G2243G3992G1508G1519G4558G4605G4314G1135G5503 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian."G2532G4183G3015G2258G1722G2474G1909G1666G4396G2532G3762G846G2511G1508G3497G4948 28When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.G2532G3956G1722G4864G191G5023G4130G2372 29Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,G2532G450G1544G846G1854G4172G2532G71G846G2193G3790G3735G1909G3739G846G4172G3618G1519G2630G846G2630 30but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.G1161G846G1330G1223G3319G846G4198

Jesus Casts Out a Demon

31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.G2532G2718G1519G2584G4172G1056G2532G1321G846G2258G1722G4521 32There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.G2532G1605G1909G846G1322G3754G846G3056G2258G1722G1849 33Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon—an evil spirit—began shouting at Jesus,G2532G1722G4864G2258G444G2192G4151G169G1140G2532G349G3173G5456 34"Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are?the Holy One sent from God!"G3004G1436G5101G2254G4671G2532G2424G3479G2064G622G2248G1492G4571G5101G1488G40G2316 35Jesus cut him short. "Be quiet! Come out of the man," he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.G2532G2424G2008G846G3004G5392G2532G1831G1537G846G2532G1140G4496G846G1519G3319G1831G575G846G984G846G3367 36Amazed, the people exclaimed, "What authority and power this man's words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!"G2532G1096G1909G3956G2285G2532G4814G4314G240G3004G5101G3056G3778G3754G1722G1849G2532G1411G2004G169G4151G2532G1831 37The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region.G2532G2279G4012G846G1607G1519G3956G5117G4066

Jesus Heals Many People

38After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon's home, where he found Simon's mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. "Please heal her," everyone begged.G1161G450G1537G4864G1525G1519G4613G3614G1161G4613G3994G2258G4912G3173G4446G2532G2065G846G4012G846 39Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.G2532G2186G1883G846G2008G4446G2532G863G846G3916G450G1161G1247G846 40As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.G1161G2246G1416G3956G3745G2192G770G4164G3554G71G846G4314G846G1161G2007G5495G2007G1538G1520G846G2323G846 41Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.G1161G1140G2532G1831G575G4183G2896G2532G3004G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G2532G2008G1439G846G3756G2980G3754G1492G846G1511G5547

Jesus Continues to Preach

42Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.G1161G1096G2250G1831G4198G1519G2048G5117G2532G3793G2212G846G2532G2064G2193G846G2532G2722G846G3361G4198G575G846 43But he replied, "I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent."G1161G2036G4314G846G3754G3165G1163G2097G932G2316G2087G4172G2532G3754G1519G5124G649 44So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.G2532G2258G2784G1722G4864G1056
