Jesus Sentenced to Death

19Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.G5119G4091G3767G2983G2424G2532G31462The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.G2532G4757G4120G4735G1537G173G2007G846G2776G2532G4016G846G4210G24403"Hail! King of the Jews!" they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.G2532G3004G5463G935G2453G2532G1325G846G44754Pilate went outside again and said to the people, "I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty."G4091G3767G1831G1854G3825G2532G3004G846G2396G71G846G1854G5213G2443G1097G3754G2147G3762G156G1722G8465Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!"G3767G1831G2424G1854G5409G4735G174G2532G4210G2440G2532G3004G846G2396G4446When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."G3753G749G3767G2532G5257G1492G846G2905G3004G4717G4717G4091G3004G846G2983G5210G846G2532G4717G1063G1473G2147G3756G156G1722G8467The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."G2453G611G846G2249G2192G3551G2532G2596G2257G3551G3784G599G3754G4160G1438G5207G23168When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.G3753G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G5399G3123G53999He took Jesus back into the headquartersc again and asked him, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.G2532G1525G3825G1519G4232G2532G3004G2424G4159G1488G4771G1161G2424G1325G846G3756G61210"Why don't you talk to me?" Pilate demanded. "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?"G3767G3004G4091G846G2980G3756G1698G1492G3756G3754G2192G1849G4717G4571G2532G2192G1849G630G457111Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."G2424G611G2192G3756G1849G3762G2596G1700G1508G2258G1325G4671G509G5124G1223G3860G3165G4671G2192G3187G26612Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, "If you release this man, you are no 'friend of Caesar.'c Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."G1537G5127G4091G2212G630G846G1161G2453G2896G3004G1437G630G5126G630G1488G3756G2541G5384G3956G4160G846G935G483G254113When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavementc.G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G71G2424G1854G2532G2523G1909G968G1519G5117G3004G3038G1161G1447G104214It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the peoplec, "Look, here is your king!"G1161G2258G3904G3957G1161G5616G1623G5610G2532G3004G2453G2396G5216G93515"Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him! Crucify him!" "What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back.G1161G2905G142G142G4717G846G4091G3004G846G4717G5216G935G749G611G2192G3756G935G1508G2541

The Crucifixion

16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.G5119G3860G846G3767G846G2443G4717G1161G3880G2424G2532G52017Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skullc.G2532G941G846G4716G1831G1519G5117G3004G2898G3739G3004G1447G111518There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.G3699G4717G846G2532G1417G243G3326G846G2532G1782G1782G1161G2424G331919And Pilate posted a sign over him that read, "Jesus of Nazarethc, the King of the Jews."G1161G2532G4091G1125G5102G2532G5087G1909G4716G1161G1125G2258G2424G3480G935G245320The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.G5126G5102G3767G314G4183G2453G3754G5117G3699G2424G4717G2258G1451G4172G2532G2258G1125G1447G1676G451521Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, "Change it from 'The King of the Jews' to 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'"G3767G3004G749G2453G4091G1125G3361G935G2453G235G3754G1565G2036G1510G935G245322Pilate replied, "No, what I have written, I have written."G4091G611G3739G1125G112523When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.G3767G4757G3753G4717G2424G2983G846G2440G2532G4160G5064G3313G1538G4757G3313G2532G5509G1161G5509G2258G729G5307G1537G509G1223G365024So they said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dicec for it." This fulfilled the Scripture that says, "They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing." So that is what they did.G2036G3767G4314G240G4977G3361G4977G846G235G2975G4012G846G5101G2071G2443G1124G4137G3588G3004G1266G3450G2440G1438G2532G1909G3450G2441G906G2819G5023G3303G3767G4757G416025Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother, and his mother's sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.G1161G2476G3844G4716G2424G846G3384G2532G846G3384G79G3137G3588G2832G2532G3137G309426When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, "Dear woman, here is your son."G2424G3767G1492G3384G2532G3101G3936G3739G25G3004G846G3384G1135G2400G4675G520727And he said to this disciple, "Here is your mother." And from then on this disciple took her into his home.G1534G3004G3101G2400G4675G3384G2532G575G1565G5610G3101G2983G846G1519G2398

The Death of Jesus

28Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."cG3326G5124G2424G1492G3754G3956G5055G2235G5055G2443G1124G5048G3004G137229A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.G3767G2749G4632G3324G3690G1161G4130G4699G3690G2532G4060G5301G4374G846G475030When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.G3753G2424G3767G2983G3690G2036G5055G2532G2827G2776G3860G415131It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath c. So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.G2453G3767G1893G2258G2258G3904G3363G4983G3306G3363G3306G1909G4716G1722G4521G1063G1565G4521G2258G3173G2250G2065G4091G2443G846G4628G2608G2532G14232So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.G3767G2064G4757G2532G2608G4628G3303G4413G2532G243G3588G4957G84633But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.G1161G5613G2064G1909G2424G1492G846G2348G2235G2608G3756G846G462834One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.G235G1520G4757G3057G3572G846G4125G2532G2117G1831G129G2532G520435(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also can believec.)G2532G3708G3140G2532G846G3141G2076G228G2548G1492G3754G3004G227G2443G5210G410036These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, "Not one of his bones will be broken,"cG1063G5023G1096G2443G1124G4137G3747G846G4937G3756G493737and "They will look on the one they pierced."cG2532G3825G2087G1124G3004G3700G1519G3739G1574

The Burial of Jesus

38Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus' body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.G1161G3326G5023G2501G575G707G5607G3101G2424G1161G2928G1223G5401G2453G2065G4091G2443G142G4983G2424G2532G4091G2010G2064G3767G2532G142G4983G242439With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five poundsc of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.G1161G2064G2532G3530G3588G4412G2064G4314G2424G3571G5342G3395G4666G2532G250G5616G1540G304640Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.G3767G2983G4983G2424G2532G1210G846G3608G3326G759G2531G1485G2453G2076G177941The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.G1161G1722G5117G3699G4717G2258G2779G2532G1722G2779G2537G3419G1722G3739G5087G3764G3762G3764G508742And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passoverc and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.G1563G5087G2424G3767G1223G2453G3904G3754G3419G2258G1451
