The Raising of Lazarus

11A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.G1161G5100G2258G770G2976G575G963G1537G2968G3137G2532G846G79G3136 2This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick.G1161G2258G3137G3588G218G2962G3464G2532G1591G846G4228G846G2359G3739G80G2976G770 3So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, "Lord, your dear friend is very sick."G3767G79G649G4314G846G3004G2962G2396G3739G5368G770 4But when Jesus heard about it he said, "Lazarus's sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this."G1161G2424G191G2036G3778G769G2076G3756G4314G2288G235G5228G1391G2316G2443G5207G2316G1392G1223G846 5So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus,G1161G2424G25G3136G2532G846G79G2532G2976 6he stayed where he was for the next two days.G5613G191G3767G3754G770G3306G1417G2250G5119G3303G1722G5117G3739G2258 7Finally, he said to his disciples, "Let's go back to Judea."G1899G3326G5124G3004G3101G71G1519G2449G3825 8But his disciples objected. "Rabbi," they said, "only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?"G3101G3004G846G4461G2453G3568G2212G3034G4571G2532G5217G1563G3825 9Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.G2424G611G1526G3780G1427G5610G2250G1437G5100G4043G1722G2250G4350G3756G3754G991G5457G5127G2889 10But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light."G1161G1437G5100G4043G1722G3571G4350G3754G2076G3756G5457G1722G846 11Then he said, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up."G5023G2036G846G2532G3326G5124G3004G846G2257G5384G2976G2837G235G4198G2443G1852G846G1852 12The disciples said, "Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!"G3767G2036G846G3101G2962G1487G2837G4982 13They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.G1161G2424G2046G4012G846G2288G1161G1565G1380G3754G3004G4012G2838G5258 14So he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.G5119G3767G2036G2424G846G3954G2976G599 15And for your sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there, for now you will really believe. Come, let's go see him."G2532G5463G1223G5209G3754G2252G2258G3756G1563G2443G4100G235G71G4314G846 16Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too—and die with Jesus."G3767G2036G2381G3588G3004G1324G4827G71G2532G71G2443G2249G599G3326G846 17When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.G3767G2424G2064G2147G846G2192G1722G3419G5064G2250G2235 18Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem,G1161G963G2258G1451G2414G5613G1178G4712G575 19and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.G2532G4183G1537G2453G2064G4314G3136G2532G3137G4012G2443G3888G846G4012G846G80 20When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.G3767G3136G5613G191G3754G2424G2064G5221G846G1161G3137G2516G1722G3624 21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.G3767G2036G3136G4314G2424G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G2348G3756G2348 22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask."G235G1492G2532G3568G3754G3745G302G154G2316G2316G1325G4671 23Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again."G2424G3004G846G4675G80G450 24"Yes," Martha said, "he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day."G3136G3004G846G1492G3754G450G1722G386G1722G2078G2250 25Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.G2424G2036G846G1473G1510G386G2532G2222G4100G1519G1691G2579G599G2198 26Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?"G2532G3956G2198G2532G4100G1519G1691G599G3364G1519G165G599G4100G5124 27"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God."G3004G846G3483G2962G1473G4100G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G3588G2064G1519G2889 28Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, "The Teacher is here and wants to see you."G2532G2036G5023G2036G565G2532G5455G3137G846G79G2977G2036G1320G3918G2532G5455G4571 29So Mary immediately went to him.G5613G1565G191G1453G5035G2532G2064G4314G846 30Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.G1161G2424G2064G3768G2064G1519G2968G235G2258G1722G5117G3699G3136G5221G846 31When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus's grave to weep. So they followed her there.G2453G3767G3588G5607G3326G846G1722G3614G2532G3888G846G1492G3137G3754G450G5030G2532G1831G190G846G3004G3754G5217G1519G3419G2443G2799G1563 32When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died."G3767G5613G3137G2064G3699G2424G2258G1492G846G4098G1519G846G4228G3004G846G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G3756G599 33When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled.G5613G2424G3767G1492G846G2799G2532G2453G2799G4905G846G1690G4151G2532G5015G1438 34"Where have you put him?" he asked them. They told him, "Lord, come and see."G2532G2036G4226G5087G846G3004G846G2962G2064G2532G1492 35Then Jesus wept.G2424G1145 36The people who were standing nearby said, "See how much he loved him!"G3767G3004G2453G2396G4459G5368G846 37But some said, "This man healed a blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?"G1161G5100G1537G846G2036G1410G3756G3778G3588G455G3788G5185G4160G2443G2532G3778G599G3361G599 38Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.G2424G3767G3825G1690G1722G1438G2064G1519G3419G1161G2258G4693G2532G3037G1945G1909G846 39"Roll the stone aside," Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, protested, "Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible."G2424G3004G142G3037G3136G79G2348G3004G846G2962G2235G3605G1063G2076G5066 40Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believe?"G2424G3004G846G2036G3756G4671G3754G1437G4100G3700G1391G2316 41So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me.G3767G142G3037G3757G2348G2258G2749G1161G2424G142G507G3788G2532G2036G3962G2168G4671G3754G191G3450 42You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me."G1161G1473G1492G3754G191G3450G3842G235G1223G3793G3588G4026G2036G2443G4100G3754G4771G649G3165 43Then Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out!"G2532G5023G2036G2905G3173G5456G2976G1204G1854 44And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, "Unwrap him and let him go!"G2532G2348G1831G1210G5495G2532G4228G2750G2532G846G3799G4019G4676G2424G3004G846G3089G846G2532G863G5217

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.G3767G4183G1537G2453G3588G2064G4314G3137G2532G2300G3739G2424G4160G4100G1519G846 46But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.G1161G5100G1537G846G565G4314G5330G2532G2036G846G3739G2424G4160 47Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. "What are we going to do?" they asked each other. "This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.G3767G4863G749G2532G5330G4892G2532G3004G5101G4160G3754G3778G444G4160G4183G4592 48If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation."G1437G863G846G3779G863G3956G4100G1519G846G2532G4514G2064G2532G142G2532G2257G5117G2532G1484 49Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, "You don't know what you're talking about!G1161G1520G5100G1537G846G2533G5607G749G1565G1763G2036G846G5210G1492G3756G3762 50You don't realize that it's better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed."G3761G1260G3754G4851G2254G2443G1520G444G599G5228G2992G2532G3650G1484G622G3361 51He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.G1161G5124G2036G3756G575G1438G235G5607G749G1565G1763G4395G3754G2424G3195G599G5228G1484 52And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.G2532G3756G5228G1484G3440G235G2443G2532G4863G1519G1520G5043G2316G1287 53So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus' death.G3767G575G1565G2250G4823G2443G615G846G615 54As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.G2424G3767G4043G3765G3954G1722G2453G235G565G1564G1519G5561G1451G2048G1519G4172G3004G2187G2546G1304G3326G846G3101 55It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.G1161G2453G3957G2258G1451G2532G4183G305G1537G5561G1519G2414G4253G3957G2443G48G1438 56They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, "What do you think? He won't come for Passover, will he?"G3767G2212G2424G2532G3004G3326G240G2476G1722G2411G5101G1380G5213G3754G2064G3364G2064G1519G1859 57Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.G1161G2532G749G2532G5330G1325G1785G2443G1437G5100G1097G4226G2076G3377G3704G4084G846
