Judges 1

Israel’s Failure to Complete the Conquest of Canaan

1After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"H310H4194H3091H1121H3478H7592H3068H559H5927H3669H8462H38982The LORD said, "Judah shall go up. I hereby give the land into his hand."H3068H559H3063H5927H5414H776H30273Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; then I too will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.H3063H559H8095H251H5927H1486H3898H3669H1980H1486H8095H32124Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek.H3063H5927H3068H5414H3669H6522H3027H5221H966H6235H505H3765They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.H4672H137H966H3898H5221H3669H65226Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.H137H5127H7291H310H270H7112H931H3027H72727Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has paid me back." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.H137H559H7657H4428H931H3027H7272H7112H3950H7979H6213H430H7999H935H3389H41918Then the people of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it. They put it to the sword and set the city on fire.H1121H3063H3898H3389H3920H5221H6310H2719H7971H5892H7849Afterward the people of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.H310H1121H3063H3381H3898H3669H3427H2022H5045H821910Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.H3063H3212H3669H3427H2275H8034H2275H6440H7153H5221H8344H289H852611From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir (the name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher).H3212H3427H1688H8034H1688H6440H715812Then Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as wife."H3612H559H5221H7158H3920H5414H5915H1323H80213And Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife.H6274H1121H7073H3612H6996H251H3920H5414H5915H1323H80214When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. As she dismounted from her donkey, Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"H935H5496H7592H1H7704H6795H2543H3612H55915She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also Gulloth-mayim." So Caleb gave her Upper Gulloth and Lower Gulloth.H559H3051H1293H5414H5045H776H5414H1543H4325H3612H5414H5942H1543H8482H154316The descendants of Hobab the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad. Then they went and settled with the Amalekites.H1121H7017H4872H2859H5927H5892H8558H5899H1121H3063H4057H3063H5045H6166H3212H3427H854H597117Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and devoted it to destruction. So the city was called Hormah.H3063H3212H8095H251H5221H3669H3427H6857H2763H8034H5892H7121H276718Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.H3063H3920H5804H1366H831H1366H6138H136619The LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron.H3068H3063H3423H2022H3808H3423H3427H6010H7393H127020Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.H5414H2275H3612H4872H1696H3423H7969H1121H606121But the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived in Jerusalem among the Benjaminites to this day.H1121H1144H3423H2983H3427H3389H2983H3427H1121H1144H3389H311722The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.H1004H3130H5927H1008H306823The house of Joseph sent out spies to Bethel (the name of the city was formerly Luz).H1004H3130H8446H1008H8034H5892H6440H387024When the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, "Show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you."H8104H7200H376H3318H5892H559H7200H3996H5892H6213H261725So he showed them the way into the city; and they put the city to the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.H7200H3996H5892H5221H5892H6310H2719H7971H376H494026So the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and named it Luz; that is its name to this day.H376H3212H776H2850H1129H5892H7121H8034H3870H8034H311727Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites continued to live in that land.H4519H3423H1052H1323H8590H1323H3427H1756H1323H3427H2991H1323H3427H4023H1323H3669H2974H3427H77628When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not in fact drive them out.H3478H2388H7760H3669H4522H3423H342329And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived among them in Gezer.H669H3423H3669H3427H1507H3669H3427H1507H713030Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.H2074H3423H3427H7003H3427H5096H3669H3427H7130H452231Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob;H836H3423H3427H5910H3427H6721H303H392H2462H663H734032but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.H843H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H342333Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.H5321H3423H3427H1053H3427H1043H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H3427H1053H1043H452234The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country; they did not allow them to come down to the plain.H567H3905H1121H1835H2022H5414H3381H601035The Amorites continued to live in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.H567H2974H3427H2022H2776H357H8169H3027H1004H3130H3513H452236The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.H1366H567H4608H4610H5553H4605

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
