Matthew 16

The Pharisees and Sadducees Seek a Sign

16Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.G5330G2532G4523G4334G2532G3985G1905G846G1925G846G4592G1537G37722He answered and said to them, "When it is evening you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red';G1161G611G2036G846G1096G3798G3004G2105G1063G3772G44493"and in the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.G2532G4404G5494G4594G1063G3772G4449G4768G5273G1097G1252G3303G4383G3772G1161G1410G3756G4592G25404"A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed.G4190G2532G3428G1074G1934G4592G2532G3756G4592G1325G846G1508G4592G4396G2495G2532G2641G846G565

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.G2532G846G3101G2064G1519G4008G1950G2983G7406Then Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees."G1161G2424G2036G846G3708G2532G4337G575G2219G5330G2532G45237And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have taken no bread."G1161G1260G1722G1438G3004G3754G2983G3756G7408But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?G1161G2424G1097G2036G846G3640G5101G1260G1722G1438G3754G2983G3756G7409"Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?G3539G3768G3539G3761G3421G4002G740G4000G2532G4214G2894G298310"Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up?G3761G2033G740G5070G2532G4214G4711G298311"How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."G4459G3754G3539G3756G3539G2036G3756G5213G4012G740G4337G575G2219G5330G2532G452312Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.G5119G4920G3754G2036G3756G4337G575G2219G740G235G575G1322G5330G2532G4523

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"G1161G2424G2064G1519G3313G2542G5376G2065G846G3101G3004G5101G444G3004G3165G5207G444G151114So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."G1161G2036G3303G2491G910G1161G243G2243G1161G2087G2408G2228G1520G439615He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"G3004G846G1161G5101G3004G5210G3165G151116Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."G1161G4613G4074G611G2036G4771G1488G5547G5207G2198G231617Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.G2532G2424G611G2036G846G3107G1488G4613G920G3754G4561G2532G129G601G3756G601G4671G235G3450G3962G3588G1722G377218"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.G1161G3004G2504G4671G3754G4771G1488G4074G2532G1909G5026G4073G3618G3450G1577G2532G4439G86G2729G3756G2729G84619"And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."G2532G1325G4671G2807G932G3772G2532G3739G1437G1210G1909G1093G2071G1210G1722G3772G2532G3739G1437G3089G1909G1093G2071G3089G1722G377220Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.G5119G1291G846G3101G2443G2036G3367G3754G846G2076G2424G5547

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

21From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.G575G5119G756G2424G1166G846G3101G3754G846G1163G565G1519G2414G2532G3958G4183G575G4245G2532G749G2532G1122G2532G615G2532G1453G5154G225022Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!"G2532G4074G4355G846G756G2008G846G3004G2436G4671G2962G5124G2071G3364G2071G467123But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."G1161G4762G2036G4074G5217G3694G3450G4567G1488G3754G4625G3450G5426G3756G3588G2316G235G444

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him

24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.G5119G2036G2424G846G3101G1536G2309G2064G3694G3450G533G1438G2532G142G846G4716G2532G190G342725"For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.G1063G3739G302G2309G4982G846G5590G622G846G1161G3739G302G622G846G5590G1752G1700G1752G2147G84626"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?G1063G5101G444G5623G1437G2770G3650G2889G1161G2210G846G5590G2228G5101G444G1325G465G846G559027"For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.G1063G5207G444G3195G2064G1722G1391G846G3962G3326G846G32G2532G5119G591G1538G2596G846G423428"Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."G281G3004G5213G1526G5100G2476G5602G3748G1089G3364G1089G2288G302G2193G1492G5207G444G2064G1722G846G932

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
