Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat

8In the third year of King Belshazzar's reign, I, Daniel, had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me.H7969H8141H4438H4428H1112H2377H7200H1840H310H7200H84622In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa in the province of Elam; in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal.H7200H2377H7200H7800H1002H4082H5867H7200H2377H180H1953I looked up, and there before me was a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later.H5375H5869H7200H5975H6440H180H259H352H7161H7161H1364H259H1364H8145H1364H5927H3144I watched the ram as he charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against him, and none could rescue from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.H7200H352H5055H3220H6828H5045H2416H5975H6440H5337H3027H6213H7522H14315As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between his eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground.H995H5795H6842H935H4628H6440H776H5060H776H6842H2380H7161H58696He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at him in great rage.H935H352H1167H7161H7200H5975H6440H180H7323H2534H35817I saw him attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering his two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against him; the goat knocked him to the ground and trampled on him, and none could rescue the ram from his power.H7200H5060H681H352H4843H5221H352H7665H8147H7161H3581H352H5975H6440H7993H776H7429H5337H352H30278The goat became very great, but at the height of his power his large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.H6842H5795H3966H1431H6105H1419H7161H7665H5927H702H2380H702H7307H80649Out of one of them came another horn, which started small but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land.H259H3318H4704H7161H3499H1431H5045H4217H664310It grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them.H1431H6635H8064H5307H6635H3556H776H742911It set itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; it took away the daily sacrifice from him, and the place of his sanctuary was brought low.H1431H8269H6635H8548H7311H7311H4349H4720H799312Because of rebellion, the host of the saints and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.H6635H5414H8548H6588H7993H571H776H6213H674313Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, "How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host that will be trampled underfoot?"H8085H259H6918H1696H259H6918H559H6422H1696H2377H8548H6588H8074H5414H6944H6635H482314He said to me, "It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated."H559H505H7969H3967H6153H1242H6944H6663

The Interpretation of the Vision

15While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.H1840H7200H2377H1245H998H5975H4758H139716And I heard a man's voice from the Ulai calling, "Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision."H8085H120H6963H195H7121H559H1403H1975H995H475817As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision concerns the time of the end."H935H681H5977H935H1204H5307H6440H559H995H1121H120H6256H7093H237718While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.H1696H7290H6440H776H5060H5975H597719He said: "I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end.H559H3045H319H2195H4150H709320The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.H352H7200H1167H7161H4428H4074H653921The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes is the first king.H8163H6842H4428H3120H1419H7161H5869H7223H442822The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.H7665H702H5975H702H4438H5975H1471H358123"In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue, will arise.H319H4438H6586H8552H4428H5794H6440H995H2420H597524He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people.H3581H6105H3581H7843H6381H6743H6213H7843H6099H6918H597125He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.H7922H4820H6743H3027H1431H3824H7962H7843H7227H5975H8269H8269H7665H657H302726"The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future."H4758H6153H1242H559H571H5640H2377H7227H311727I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days. Then I got up and went about the king's business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.H1840H1961H2470H3117H6965H6213H4428H4399H8074H4758H995
