Judges 1

Jerusalem Is Captured

1Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired of the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"H310H4194H3091H1121H3478H7592H3068H559H5927H3669H8462H38982And the LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."H3068H559H3063H5927H5414H776H30273Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I in turn will go with you into the territory allotted you." So Simeon went with him.H3063H559H8095H251H5927H1486H3898H3669H1980H1486H8095H32124And Judah went up, and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands; and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.H3063H5927H3068H5414H3669H6522H3027H5221H966H6235H505H3765And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.H4672H137H966H3898H5221H3669H65226But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.H137H5127H7291H310H270H7112H931H3027H72727And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up [scraps] under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." So they brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.H137H559H7657H4428H931H3027H7272H7112H3950H7979H6213H430H7999H935H3389H41918Then the sons of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.H1121H3063H3898H3389H3920H5221H6310H2719H7971H5892H7849And afterward the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country and in the Negev and in the lowland.H310H1121H3063H3381H3898H3669H3427H2022H5045H821910So Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron formerly [was] Kiriath-arba); and they struck Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.H3063H3212H3669H3427H2275H8034H2275H6440H7153H5221H8344H289H8526

Capture of Other Cities

11Then from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly [was] Kiriath-sepher).H3212H3427H1688H8034H1688H6440H715812And Caleb said, "The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife."H3612H559H5221H7158H3920H5414H5915H1323H80213And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.H6274H1121H7073H3612H6996H251H3920H5414H5915H1323H80214Then it came about when she came [to him,] that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you want?"H935H5496H7592H1H7704H6795H2543H3612H55915And she said to him, "Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.H559H3051H1293H5414H5045H776H5414H1543H4325H3612H5414H5942H1543H8482H154316And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.H1121H7017H4872H2859H5927H5892H8558H5899H1121H3063H4057H3063H5045H6166H3212H3427H854H597117Then Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites living in Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.H3063H3212H8095H251H5221H3669H3427H6857H2763H8034H5892H7121H276718And Judah took Gaza with its territory and Ashkelon with its territory and Ekron with its territory.H3063H3920H5804H1366H831H1366H6138H136619Now the LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.H3068H3063H3423H2022H3808H3423H3427H6010H7393H127020Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.H5414H2275H3612H4872H1696H3423H7969H1121H606121But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.H1121H1144H3423H2983H3427H3389H2983H3427H1121H1144H3389H311722Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.H1004H3130H5927H1008H306823And the house of Joseph spied out Bethel (now the name of the city was formerly Luz).H1004H3130H8446H1008H8034H5892H6440H387024And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Please show us the entrance to the city and we will treat you kindly."H8104H7200H376H3318H5892H559H7200H3996H5892H6213H261725So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.H7200H3996H5892H5221H5892H6310H2719H7971H376H494026And the man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz which is its name to this day.H376H3212H776H2850H1129H5892H7121H8034H3870H8034H3117

Places Not Conquered

27But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.H4519H3423H1052H1323H8590H1323H3427H1756H1323H3427H2991H1323H3427H4023H1323H3669H2974H3427H77628And it came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.H3478H2388H7760H3669H4522H3423H342329Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.H669H3423H3669H3427H1507H3669H3427H1507H713030Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labor.H2074H3423H3427H7003H3427H5096H3669H3427H7130H452231Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob.H836H3423H3427H5910H3427H6721H303H392H2462H663H734032So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.H843H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H342333Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.H5321H3423H3427H1053H3427H1043H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H3427H1053H1043H452234Then the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley;H567H3905H1121H1835H2022H5414H3381H601035yet the Amorites persisted in living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon and in Shaalbim; but when the power of the house of Joseph grew strong, they became forced labor.H567H2974H3427H2022H2776H357H8169H3027H1004H3130H3513H452236And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.H1366H567H4608H4610H5553H4605

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
