Spies Sent to Jericho

2Then Joshua son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there.H3091H1121H5126H7971H7851H8147H582H7270H2791H559H3212H7200H776H3405H3212H935H2181H802H1004H8034H7343H7901 2The king of Jericho was told, "Some Israelites have come here tonight to search out the land."H559H4428H3405H559H935H582H3915H1121H3478H2658H776 3Then the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come only to search out the whole land."H4428H3405H7971H7343H559H3318H582H935H935H1004H935H2658H776 4But the woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, "True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they came from.H802H3947H8147H582H6845H559H935H582H3045H370 5And when it was time to close the gate at dark, the men went out. Where the men went I do not know. Pursue them quickly, for you can overtake them."H5462H8179H2822H582H3318H582H1980H3045H7291H310H4118H5381 6She had, however, brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax that she had laid out on the roof.H5927H1406H2934H6086H6593H6186H1406 7So the men pursued them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. As soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.H582H7291H310H1870H3383H4569H7291H310H3318H5462H8179 8Before they went to sleep, she came up to them on the roofH7901H5927H1406 9and said to the men: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before you.H559H582H3045H3068H5414H776H367H5307H3427H776H4127H6440 10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.H8085H3068H3001H4325H5488H3220H6440H3318H4714H6213H8147H4428H567H5676H3383H5511H5747H2763 11As soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no courage left in any of us because of you. The LORD your God is indeed God in heaven above and on earth below.H8085H3824H4549H6965H7307H376H6440H3068H430H430H8064H4605H776 12Now then, since I have dealt kindly with you, swear to me by the LORD that you in turn will deal kindly with my family. Give me a sign of good faithH7650H3068H3588H6213H2617H6213H2617H1H1004H5414H571H226 13that you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death."H2421H1H517H251H269H5337H5315H4194 14The men said to her, "Our life for yours! If you do not tell this business of ours, then we will deal kindly and faithfully with you when the LORD gives us the land."H582H559H5315H4191H5046H1697H3068H5414H776H6213H2617H571 15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the outer side of the city wall and she resided within the wall itself.H3381H2256H1157H2474H1004H7023H2346H3427H2346 16She said to them, "Go toward the hill country, so that the pursuers may not come upon you. Hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned; then afterward you may go your way."H559H3212H2022H7291H6293H2247H7969H3117H7291H7725H310H3212H1870 17The men said to her, "We will be released from this oath that you have made us swear to youH582H559H5355H7621H7650 18if we invade the land and you do not tie this crimson cord in the window through which you let us down, and you do not gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your family.H935H776H7194H8615H8144H2339H2474H3381H622H1H517H251H1H1004H1004 19If any of you go out of the doors of your house into the street, they shall be responsible for their own death, and we shall be innocent; but if a hand is laid upon any who are with you in the house, we shall bear the responsibility for their death.H834H3318H1817H1004H2351H1818H7218H5355H1004H1818H7218H3027 20But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be released from this oath that you made us swear to you."H5046H1697H5355H7621H7650 21She said, "According to your words, so be it." She sent them away and they departed. Then she tied the crimson cord in the window.H559H1697H7971H3212H7194H8144H8615H2474 22They departed and went into the hill country and stayed there three days, until the pursuers returned. The pursuers had searched all along the way and found nothing.H3212H935H2022H3427H7969H3117H7291H7725H7291H1245H1870H4672 23Then the two men came down again from the hill country. They crossed over, came to Joshua son of Nun, and told him all that had happened to them.H8147H582H7725H3381H2022H5674H935H3091H1121H5126H5608H4672 24They said to Joshua, "Truly the LORD has given all the land into our hands; moreover all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before us."H559H3091H3588H3068H5414H3027H776H3427H776H4127H6440
