Jonathan Defeats the Philistines

14Now it happened one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the Philistines' garrison that is on the other side." But he did not tell his father.H3117H3129H1121H7586H559H5288H5375H3627H3212H5674H6430H4673H5676H1975H5046H12And Saul was sitting in the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men.H7586H3427H7097H1390H7416H4051H5971H8337H3967H3763Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD'S priest in Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. But the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.H281H1121H285H350H251H1121H6372H1121H5941H3068H3548H7887H5375H646H5971H3045H3129H19804Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on one side and a sharp rock on the other side. And the name of one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.H4569H3129H1245H5674H6430H4673H8127H5553H5676H8127H5553H5676H8034H259H949H8034H259H55735The front of one faced northward opposite Michmash, and the other southward opposite Gibeah.H8127H259H4690H6828H4136H4363H259H5045H4136H13876Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few."H3083H559H5288H5375H3627H3212H5674H4673H6189H3068H6213H4622H3068H3467H7227H45927So his armorbearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart."H5375H3627H559H6213H3824H5186H38248Then Jonathan said, "Very well, let us cross over to these men, and we will show ourselves to them.H559H3083H5674H582H15409"If they say thus to us, 'Wait until we come to you,' then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them.H559H1826H5060H5975H592710"But if they say thus, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up. For the LORD has delivered them into our hand, and this will be a sign to us."H559H5927H5927H3068H5414H3027H22611So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, "Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden."H8147H1540H4673H6430H6430H559H5680H3318H2356H224412Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, "Come up to us, and we will show you something." Jonathan said to his armorbearer, "Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel."H582H4675H6030H3129H5375H3627H559H5927H3045H1697H3129H559H5375H3627H5927H310H3068H5414H3027H347813And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them.H3129H5927H3027H7272H5375H3627H310H5307H6440H3129H5375H3627H4191H31014That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land.H7223H4347H3129H5375H3627H5221H6242H376H2677H4618H7704H677615And there was trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so that it was a very great trembling.H2731H4264H7704H5971H4673H7843H2729H776H7264H430H273116Now the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and there was the multitude, melting away; and they went here and there.H6822H7586H1390H1144H7200H1995H4127H3212H198617Then Saul said to the people who were with him, "Now call the roll and see who has gone from us." And when they had called the roll, surprisingly, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there.H559H7586H5971H6485H7200H1980H6485H3129H5375H362718And Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God here" (for at that time the ark of God was with the children of Israel).H7586H559H281H5066H727H430H727H430H3117H1121H347819Now it happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the noise which was in the camp of the Philistines continued to increase; so Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."H7586H1696H3548H1995H4264H6430H3212H1980H7227H7586H559H3548H622H302720Then Saul and all the people who were with him assembled, and they went to the battle; and indeed every man's sword was against his neighbor, and there was very great confusion.H7586H5971H2199H935H4421H376H2719H7453H3966H1419H410321Moreover the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the surrounding country, they also joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.H5680H6430H865H8032H5927H4264H5439H3478H7586H312922Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden in the mountains of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also followed hard after them in the battle.H376H3478H2244H2022H669H8085H6430H5127H1692H310H442123So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven.H3068H3467H3478H3117H4421H5674H1007

Saul’s Rash Oath

24And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had placed the people under oath, saying, "Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies." So none of the people tasted food.H376H3478H5065H3117H7586H422H5971H559H779H376H398H3899H6153H5358H341H5971H2938H389925Now all the people of the land came to a forest; and there was honey on the ground.H776H935H3293H1706H6440H770426And when the people had come into the woods, there was the honey, dripping; but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.H5971H935H3293H1706H1982H5381H3027H6310H5971H3372H762127But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath; therefore he stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened.H3129H8085H1H7650H5971H7650H7971H7097H4294H3027H2881H3295H1706H7725H3027H6310H5869H21528Then one of the people said, "Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, 'Cursed is the man who eats food this day.'" And the people were faint.H6030H376H5971H559H1H7650H7650H5971H7650H559H779H376H398H3899H3117H5971H577429But Jonathan said, "My father has troubled the land. Look now, how my countenance has brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.H559H3129H1H5916H776H7200H5869H215H2938H4592H170630"How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now would there not have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?"H637H3863H5971H398H398H3117H7998H341H4672H7235H4347H643031Now they had driven back the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. So the people were very faint.H5221H6430H3117H4363H357H5971H3966H577432And the people rushed on the spoil, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.H5971H5860H6213H7998H3947H6629H1241H1121H7819H776H5971H398H181833Then they told Saul, saying, "Look, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood!" So he said, "You have dealt treacherously; roll a large stone to me this day."H5046H7586H559H5971H2398H3068H398H1818H559H898H1556H1419H68H311734And Saul said, "Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, 'Bring me here every man's ox and every man's sheep, slaughter them here, and eat; and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.'" So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night, and slaughtered it there.H7586H559H6327H5971H559H5066H376H7794H376H7716H7819H398H2398H3068H398H1818H5971H5066H376H7794H3027H3915H781935Then Saul built an altar to the LORD. This was the first altar that he built to the LORD.H7586H1129H4196H3068H2490H4196H1129H306836Now Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light; and let us not leave a man of them." And they said, "Do whatever seems good to you." Then the priest said, "Let us draw near to God here."H7586H559H3381H310H6430H3915H962H1242H216H7604H376H559H6213H5869H2896H559H3548H7126H1988H43037So Saul asked counsel of God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel?" But He did not answer him that day.H7586H7592H430H3381H310H6430H5414H3027H3478H6030H311738And Saul said, "Come over here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see what this sin was today.H7586H559H5066H1988H6438H5971H3045H7200H4100H2403H311739"For as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die." But not a man among all the people answered him.H3068H2416H3467H3478H3426H3129H1121H4191H4191H5971H603040Then he said to all Israel, "You be on one side, and my son Jonathan and I will be on the other side." And the people said to Saul, "Do what seems good to you."H559H3478H259H5676H3129H1121H259H5676H5971H559H7586H6213H5869H289641Therefore Saul said to the LORD God of Israel, "Give a perfect lot." So Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people escaped.H7586H559H3068H430H3478H3051H8549H7586H3129H3920H5971H331842And Saul said, "Cast lots between my son Jonathan and me." So Jonathan was taken.H7586H559H5307H3129H1121H3129H392043Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." And Jonathan told him, and said, "I only tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. So now I must die!"H7586H559H3129H5046H6213H3129H5046H559H2938H2938H4592H1706H7097H4294H3027H2009H419144And Saul answered, "God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan."H7586H559H430H6213H3254H4191H4191H312945But the people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel? Certainly not! As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day." So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.H5971H559H7586H3129H4191H6213H1419H3444H3478H2486H3068H2416H8185H7218H5307H776H6213H430H3117H5971H6299H3129H419146Then Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.H7586H5927H310H6430H6430H1980H4725

Saul’s Continuing Wars

47So Saul established his sovereignty over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the people of Ammon, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he harassed them.H7586H3920H4410H3478H3898H341H5439H4124H1121H5983H123H4428H6678H6430H6437H756148And he gathered an army and attacked the Amalekites, and delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.H6213H2428H5221H6002H5337H3478H3027H815449The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Jishui and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.H1121H7586H3129H3440H4444H8034H8147H1323H8034H1067H4764H8034H6996H432450The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.H8034H7586H802H293H1323H290H8034H8269H6635H74H1121H5369H7586H173051Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.H7027H1H7586H5369H1H74H1121H2252Now there was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, he took him for himself.H2389H4421H6430H3117H7586H7586H7200H1368H376H2428H1121H622
