Samuel Anoints David

16The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."H3068H559H8050H56H7586H3988H4427H3478H4390H7161H8081H3212H7971H3448H1022H7200H4428H11212But Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me." The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'H8050H559H3212H7586H8085H2026H3068H559H3947H1241H5697H3027H559H935H2076H30683Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate."H7121H3448H2077H3045H6213H4886H5594Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, "Do you come in peace?"H8050H6213H3068H1696H935H1035H2205H5892H2729H7125H559H935H79655Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.H559H7965H935H2076H3068H6942H935H2077H6942H3448H1121H7121H20776When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD'S anointed stands here before the LORD."H935H7200H446H559H3068H48997But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."H3068H559H8050H5027H4758H1364H6967H3988H120H7200H120H7200H5869H3068H7200H38248Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either."H3448H7121H41H5674H6440H8050H559H3068H9779Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the LORD chosen this one."H3448H8048H5674H559H3068H97710Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these."H3448H7651H1121H5674H6440H8050H8050H559H3448H3068H97711So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."H8050H559H3448H8552H5288H559H7604H6996H7462H6629H8050H559H3448H7971H3947H5437H935H631112So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."H7971H935H132H5973H3303H5869H2896H7210H3068H559H6965H488613So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.H8050H3947H7161H8081H4886H7130H251H7307H3068H6743H1732H3117H4605H8050H6965H3212H7414

David in Saul’s Service

14Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.H7307H3068H5493H7586H7451H7307H3068H120415Saul's attendants said to him, "See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.H7586H5650H559H7451H7307H430H120416Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the harp. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you, and you will feel better."H113H559H5650H6440H1245H376H3045H5059H3658H7451H7307H430H5059H3027H289517So Saul said to his attendants, "Find someone who plays well and bring him to me."H7586H559H5650H7200H376H5059H3190H93518One of the servants answered, "I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him."H6030H259H5288H559H7200H1121H3448H1022H3045H5059H1368H2428H376H4421H995H1697H8389H376H306819Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep."H7586H7971H4397H3448H559H7971H1732H1121H662920So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.H3448H3947H2543H3899H4997H3196H259H1423H5795H7971H3027H1732H1121H758621David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers.H1732H935H7586H5975H6440H157H3966H5375H362722Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him."H7586H7971H3448H559H1732H5975H6440H4672H2580H586923Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.H7307H430H7586H1732H3947H3658H5059H3027H7586H7304H2895H7451H7307H5493
