1Samuel 16

Samuel Goes to Bethlehem

16Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons."H3068H559H8050H56H7586H3988H4427H3478H4390H7161H8081H3212H7971H3448H1022H7200H4428H11212But Samuel said, "How can I go? When Saul hears [of it,] he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'H8050H559H3212H7586H8085H2026H3068H559H3947H1241H5697H3027H559H935H2076H30683"And you shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you."H7121H3448H2077H3045H6213H4886H5594So Samuel did what the LORD said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, "Do you come in peace?"H8050H6213H3068H1696H935H1035H2205H5892H2729H7125H559H935H79655And he said, "In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." He also consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.H559H7965H935H2076H3068H6942H935H2077H6942H3448H1121H7121H20776Then it came about when they entered, that he looked at Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him."H935H7200H446H559H3068H48997But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God [sees] not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."H3068H559H8050H5027H4758H1364H6967H3988H120H7200H120H7200H5869H3068H7200H38248Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."H3448H7121H41H5674H6440H8050H559H3068H9779Next Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."H3448H8048H5674H559H3068H97710Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these."H3448H7651H1121H5674H6440H8050H8050H559H3448H3068H97711And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are these all the children?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is tending the sheep." Then Samuel said to Jesse," Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here. "H8050H559H3448H8552H5288H559H7604H6996H7462H6629H8050H559H3448H7971H3947H5437H935H6311

David Anointed

12So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he."H7971H935H132H5973H3303H5869H2896H7210H3068H559H6965H488613Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.H8050H3947H7161H8081H4886H7130H251H7307H3068H6743H1732H3117H4605H8050H6965H3212H741414Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.H7307H3068H5493H7586H7451H7307H3068H120415Saul's servants then said to him, "Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you.H7586H5650H559H7451H7307H430H120416"Let our lord now command your servants who are before you. Let them seek a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall come about when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play [the harp] with his hand, and you will be well."H113H559H5650H6440H1245H376H3045H5059H3658H7451H7307H430H5059H3027H289517So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me now a man who can play well, and bring [him] to me."H7586H559H5650H7200H376H5059H3190H93518Then one of the young men answered and said, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and the LORD is with him."H6030H259H5288H559H7200H1121H3448H1022H3045H5059H1368H2428H376H4421H995H1697H8389H376H306819So Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me your son David who is with the flock."H7586H7971H4397H3448H559H7971H1732H1121H662920And Jesse took a donkey [loaded with] bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent [them] to Saul by David his son.H3448H3947H2543H3899H4997H3196H259H1423H5795H7971H3027H1732H1121H758621Then David came to Saul and attended him, and Saul loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.H1732H935H7586H5975H6440H157H3966H5375H362722And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David now stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight."H7586H7971H3448H559H1732H5975H6440H4672H2580H586923So it came about whenever the [evil] spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play [it] with his hand; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him.H7307H430H7586H1732H3947H3658H5059H3027H7586H7304H2895H7451H7307H5493

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
