David’s Conflict with the Amalekites

30Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,H1732H582H935H6860H7992H3117H6003H6584H5045H6860H5221H6860H8313H7842and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way.H802H7617H4191H376H1419H6996H5090H3212H18703So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.H1732H582H935H5892H8313H784H802H1121H1323H76174Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep.H1732H5971H5375H6963H1058H3581H10585And David's two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive.H1732H8147H802H7617H293H3159H26H802H5037H37616Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.H1732H3966H3334H5971H559H5619H5315H5971H4843H376H1121H1323H1732H2388H3068H4307Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, "Please bring the ephod here to me." And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.H1732H559H54H3548H288H1121H5066H646H54H5066H646H17328So David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?" And He answered him, "Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all."H1732H7592H3068H559H7291H310H1416H5381H559H7291H5381H5381H5337H53379So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the Brook Besor, where those stayed who were left behind.H1732H3212H8337H3967H376H935H5158H1308H3498H597510But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so weary that they could not cross the Brook Besor.H1732H7291H702H3967H376H3967H5975H6296H5674H5158H130811Then they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David; and they gave him bread and he ate, and they let him drink water.H4672H376H4713H7704H3947H1732H5414H3899H398H8248H432512And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. So when he had eaten, his strength came back to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water for three days and three nights.H5414H6400H1690H8147H6778H398H7307H7725H398H3899H8354H4325H7969H3117H7969H391513Then David said to him, "To whom do you belong, and where are you from?" And he said, "I am a young man from Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind, because three days ago I fell sick.H1732H559H559H5288H4713H5650H376H6003H113H5800H7969H3117H247014"We made an invasion of the southern area of the Cherethites, in the territory which belongs to Judah, and of the southern area of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire."H6584H5045H3774H3063H5045H3612H8313H6860H78415And David said to him, "Can you take me down to this troop?" So he said, "Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this troop."H1732H559H3381H1416H559H7650H430H4191H518H5462H3027H113H3381H141616And when he had brought him down, there they were, spread out over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing, because of all the great spoil which they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.H3381H5203H6440H776H398H8354H2287H1419H7998H3947H776H6430H776H306317Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.H1732H5221H5399H6153H4283H4422H376H702H3967H5288H376H7392H1581H512718So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives.H1732H5337H6002H3947H1732H5337H8147H80219And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all.H5737H4480H6996H1419H1121H1323H7998H3947H1732H772520Then David took all the flocks and herds they had driven before those other livestock, and said, "This is David's spoil."H1732H3947H6629H1241H5090H6440H1931H4735H559H1732H799821Now David came to the two hundred men who had been so weary that they could not follow David, whom they also had made to stay at the Brook Besor. So they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. And when David came near the people, he greeted them.H1732H935H3967H582H6296H3212H310H1732H3427H5158H1308H3318H7125H1732H7125H5971H1732H5066H5971H7592H796522Then all the wicked and worthless men of those who went with David answered and said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except for every man's wife and children, that they may lead them away and depart."H6030H7451H376H1100H582H1980H1732H559H1980H5414H7998H5337H376H802H1121H5090H321223But David said, "My brethren, you shall not do so with what the LORD has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us.H559H1732H6213H251H3068H5414H8104H5414H1416H935H302724"For who will heed you in this matter? But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike."H8085H1697H2506H3381H3381H4421H2506H3427H3627H2505H316225So it was, from that day forward; he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.H3117H4605H7760H2706H4941H3478H311726Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, "Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD"—H1732H935H6860H7971H7998H2205H3063H7453H559H1293H7998H341H306827to those who were in Bethel, those who were in Ramoth of the South, those who were in Jattir,H834H1008H5045H7418H349228those who were in Aroer, those who were in Siphmoth, those who were in Eshtemoa,H6177H8224H85129those who were in Rachal, those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, those who were in the cities of the Kenites,H7403H5892H3397H5892H701730those who were in Hormah, those who were in Chorashan, those who were in Athach,H2767H3565H626931those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to rove.H2275H4725H1732H582H1980
