Sennacherib Invades Judah

32After these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and thought to break into them for himself.H310H1697H571H5576H4428H804H935H935H3063H2583H1219H5892H559H12342Now when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that he intended to make war on Jerusalem,H3169H7200H5576H935H6440H4421H33893he decided with his officers and his warriors to cut off the [supply of] water from the springs which [were] outside the city, and they helped him.H3289H8269H1368H5640H4325H5869H2351H5892H58264So many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream which flowed through the region, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?"H6908H7227H5971H6908H5640H4599H5158H7857H8432H776H559H4428H804H935H4672H7227H43255And he took courage and rebuilt all the wall that had been broken down, and erected towers on it, and [built] another outside wall, and strengthened the Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great number.H2388H1129H2346H6555H5927H4026H312H2346H2351H2388H4407H5892H1732H6213H7973H4043H72306And he appointed military officers over the people, and gathered them to him in the square at the city gate, and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,H5414H8269H4421H5971H6908H7339H8179H5892H1696H3824H5597"Be strong and courageous, do not fear or be dismayed because of the king of Assyria, nor because of all the multitude which is with him; for the one with us is greater than the one with him.H2388H553H3372H2865H6440H4428H804H1995H72278"With him is [only] an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.H2220H1320H3068H430H5826H3898H4421H5971H5564H1697H3169H4428H3063

Sennacherib Undermines Hezekiah

9After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem while he [was] besieging Lachish with all his forces with him, against Hezekiah king of Judah and against all Judah who [were] at Jerusalem, saying,H310H5576H4428H804H7971H5650H3389H3923H4475H3169H4428H3063H3063H3389H55910"Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, 'On what are you trusting that you are remaining in Jerusalem under siege?H559H5576H4428H804H982H3427H4692H338911'Is not Hezekiah misleading you to give yourselves over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria"?H3169H5496H5414H4191H7458H6772H559H3068H430H5337H3709H4428H80412'Has not the same Hezekiah taken away His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, "You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense"?H3169H5493H1116H4196H559H3063H3389H559H7812H6440H259H4196H699913'Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands able at all to deliver their land from my hand?H3045H1H6213H5971H776H430H1471H776H3201H3201H5337H776H302714'Who [was there] among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed who could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?H430H1471H1H2763H3201H5337H5971H3027H430H3201H5337H302715'Now therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less shall your God deliver you from my hand?' "H3808H2396H5377H5496H539H433H1471H4467H3201H5337H5971H3027H3027H1H430H5337H302716And his servants spoke further against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah.H5650H1696H3068H430H5650H316917He also wrote letters to insult the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, "As the gods of the nations of the lands have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah shall not deliver His people from my hand."H3789H5612H2778H3068H430H3478H559H559H430H1471H776H5337H5971H3027H430H3169H5337H5971H302718And they called this out with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, so that they might take the city.H7121H1419H6963H3066H5971H3389H2346H3372H926H3920H589219And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men's hands.H1696H5921H430H3389H430H5971H776H4639H3027H120

Hezekiah’s Prayer Is Answered

20But King Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed about this and cried out to heaven.H3169H4428H5030H3470H1121H531H6419H2199H806421And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every mighty warrior, commander and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own children killed him there with the sword.H3068H7971H4397H3582H1368H2428H5057H8269H4264H4428H804H7725H1322H6440H776H935H1004H430H3329H4578H5307H271922So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [ others,] and guided them on every side.H3068H3467H3169H3427H3389H3027H5576H4428H804H3027H5095H543923And many were bringing gifts to the LORD at Jerusalem and choice presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations thereafter.H7227H935H4503H3068H3389H4030H3169H4428H3063H5375H5869H1471H31024In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill; and he prayed to the LORD, and the LORD spoke to him and gave him a sign.H3117H3169H2470H4191H6419H3068H559H5414H415925But Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit he received, because his heart was proud; therefore wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.H3169H7725H1576H3820H1361H7110H3063H338926However, Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.H3169H3665H1363H3820H3427H3389H7110H3068H935H3117H316927Now Hezekiah had immense riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuable articles,H3169H3966H7235H6239H3519H6213H214H3701H2091H3368H68H1314H4043H2532H362728storehouses also for the produce of grain, wine and oil, pens for all kinds of cattle and sheepfolds for the flocks.H4543H8393H1715H8492H3323H723H929H220H573929And he made cities for himself, and acquired flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very great wealth.H6213H5892H4735H6629H1241H7230H430H5414H7399H3966H722730It was Hezekiah who stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.H3169H5640H5945H4161H4325H1521H3474H4295H4628H5892H1732H3169H6743H463931And even [in the matter of] the envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that had happened in the land, God left him [alone only] to test him, that He might know all that was in his heart.H3651H3887H8269H894H7971H1875H4159H776H430H5800H5254H3045H382432Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his deeds of devotion, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.H3499H1697H3169H2617H3789H2377H3470H5030H1121H531H5612H4428H3063H347833So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the upper section of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. And his son Manasseh became king in his place.H3169H7901H1H6912H4608H6913H1121H1732H3063H3427H3389H6213H3519H4194H4519H1121H4427
