David Hears of Saul’s Death

1After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag.H310H4194H7586H1732H7725H5221H6002H1732H3427H8147H3117H68602And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.H7992H3117H376H935H4264H7586H899H7167H127H7218H935H1732H5307H776H78123David said to him, "Where do you come from?" And he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel."H1732H559H935H559H4264H3478H44224And David said to him, "How did it go? Tell me." And he answered, "The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead."H1732H559H4100H1697H5046H559H5971H5127H4421H7235H5971H5307H4191H7586H3083H1121H41915Then David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"H1732H559H5288H5046H3045H7586H3083H1121H41916And the young man who told him said, "By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him.H5288H5046H559H7136H7122H2022H1533H7586H8172H2595H7393H1167H6571H16927And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, 'Here I am.'H6437H310H7200H7121H5598And he said to me, 'Who are you?' I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.'H559H559H60039And he said to me 'Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.'H559H5975H4191H7661H270H531510So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord."H5975H4191H3045H2421H310H5307H3947H5145H7218H685H2220H935H11311Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.H1732H2388H899H7167H58212And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.H5594H1058H6684H6153H7586H3083H1121H5971H3068H1004H3478H5307H271913And David said to the young man who told him, "Where do you come from?" And he answered, "I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite."H1732H559H5288H5046H559H1121H376H1616H600314David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?"H1732H559H3372H7971H3027H7843H3068H489915Then David called one of the young men and said, "Go, execute him." And he struck him down so that he died.H1732H7121H259H5288H559H5066H6293H5221H419116And David said to him, "Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the LORD's anointed.'"H1732H559H1818H7218H6310H6030H559H4191H3068H4899

David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan

17And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son,H1732H6969H7015H7586H3083H112118and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar. He said:H559H3925H1121H3063H7198H3789H5612H347719"Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!H6643H3478H2491H1116H1368H530720Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.H5046H1661H1319H2351H831H1323H6430H8055H1323H6189H593721"You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.H2022H1533H2919H4306H7704H8641H4043H1368H1602H4043H7586H4899H808122"From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.H1818H2491H2459H1368H7198H3083H7734H268H2719H7586H7725H738723"Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.H7586H3083H157H5273H2416H4194H6504H7043H5404H1396H73824"You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.H1323H3478H1058H7586H3847H8144H5730H5927H5716H2091H383025"How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! "Jonathan lies slain on your high places.H1368H5307H8432H4421H3083H2491H111626I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.H6887H251H3083H3966H5276H160H6381H160H80227"How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!"H1368H5307H3627H4421H6

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
