Consecration of the Firstborn

13The LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H5592"Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether man or animal."H6942H1060H6363H7358H1121H3478H120H9293Then Moses said to the people, "Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the LORD brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast.H4872H559H5971H2142H2088H3117H3318H4714H1004H5650H2392H3027H3068H3318H2557H3984Today, in the month of Abib, you are leaving.H3117H3318H2320H245When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites—the land he swore to your forefathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you are to observe this ceremony in this month:H3068H935H776H3669H2850H567H2340H2983H7650H1H5414H776H2100H2461H1706H5647H5656H23206For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the LORD.H7651H3117H398H4682H7637H3117H2282H30687Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders.H4682H398H7651H3117H2557H7200H7603H7200H13668On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'H5046H1121H3117H559H5668H2088H3068H6213H3318H47149This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that the law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.H226H3027H2146H5869H3068H8451H6310H2389H3027H3068H3318H471410You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.H8104H2708H4150H3117H311711"After the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your forefathers,H3068H935H776H3669H7650H1H541412you are to give over to the LORD the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the LORD.H5674H3068H6363H7358H6363H7698H929H2145H306813Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.H6363H2543H6299H7716H6299H6202H1060H120H1121H629914"In days to come, when your son asks you, 'What does this mean?' say to him, 'With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.H1121H7592H4279H559H559H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714H1004H565015When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every firstborn in Egypt, both man and animal. This is why I sacrifice to the LORD the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.'H6547H7185H7971H3068H2026H1060H776H4714H1060H120H1060H929H2076H3068H6363H7358H2145H1060H1121H629916And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand."H226H3027H2903H5869H2392H3027H3068H3318H4714

Crossing the Sea

17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt."H6547H5971H7971H430H5148H1870H776H6430H3588H7138H430H559H5971H5162H7200H4421H7725H471418So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle.H430H5437H5971H5437H1870H4057H5488H3220H1121H3478H5927H2571H776H471419Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place."H4872H3947H6106H3130H7650H7650H1121H3478H559H430H6485H6485H5927H6106H592720After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.H5265H5523H2583H864H7097H405721By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.H3068H1980H6440H3119H5982H6051H5148H1870H3915H5982H784H215H3212H3119H391522Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.H4185H5982H6051H3119H5982H784H3915H6440H5971
