Ezra 10

The People’s Response

10While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him out of Israel; the people also wept bitterly.H5830H6419H3034H1058H5307H6440H1004H430H6908H3478H3966H7227H6951H582H802H3206H5971H1058H7235H10592Shecaniah son of Jehiel, of the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra, saying, "We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.H7935H1121H3171H1121H5867H6030H559H5830H4603H430H3427H5237H802H5971H776H3426H4723H34783So now let us make a covenant with our God to send away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.H3772H1285H430H3318H802H3205H6098H136H2730H4687H430H6213H84514Take action, for it is your duty, and we are with you; be strong, and do it."H6965H1697H2388H62135Then Ezra stood up and made the leading priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do as had been said. So they swore.H6965H5830H8269H3548H3881H3478H7650H6213H1697H7650

Foreign Wives and Their Children Rejected

6Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, where he spent the night. He did not eat bread or drink water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.H5830H6965H6440H1004H430H3212H3957H3076H1121H475H3212H398H3899H8354H4325H56H4604H14737They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem,H5674H6963H3063H3389H1121H1473H6908H33898and that if any did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all their property should be forfeited, and they themselves banned from the congregation of the exiles.H935H7969H3117H6098H8269H2205H7399H2763H914H6951H14739Then all the people of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. All the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.H582H3063H1144H6908H3389H7969H3117H8671H2320H6242H2320H5971H3427H7339H1004H430H7460H1697H165310Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have trespassed and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel.H5830H3548H6965H559H4603H3427H5237H802H3254H819H347811Now make confession to the LORD the God of your ancestors, and do his will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."H5414H8426H3068H430H1H6213H7522H914H5971H776H5237H80212Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, "It is so; we must do as you have said.H6951H6030H559H1419H6963H1697H621313But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for many of us have transgressed in this matter.H61H5971H7227H6256H1653H3581H5975H2351H4399H259H3117H8147H7235H6586H169714Let our officials represent the whole assembly, and let all in our towns who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every town, until the fierce wrath of our God on this account is averted from us."H8269H6951H5975H3427H5237H802H5892H935H2163H6256H2205H5892H8199H2740H639H430H1697H772515Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levites supported them.H3129H1121H6214H3167H1121H8616H5975H4918H7678H3881H582616Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of families, according to their families, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter.H1121H1473H6213H5830H3548H582H7218H1H1004H1H8034H914H3427H259H3117H6224H2320H1875H169717By the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.H3615H582H3427H5237H802H259H3117H7223H232018There were found of the descendants of the priests who had married foreign women, of the descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.H1121H3548H4672H3427H5237H802H1121H3442H1121H3136H251H4641H461H3402H143619They pledged themselves to send away their wives, and their guilt offering was a ram of the flock for their guilt.H5414H3027H3318H802H818H352H6629H81920Of the descendants of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.H1121H564H2607H206921Of the descendants of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.H1121H2766H4641H452H8098H3171H581822Of the descendants of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.H1121H6583H454H4641H3458H5417H3107H50123Of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.H3881H3107H8096H7041H7042H6611H3063H46124Of the singers: Eliashib. Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
