Genesis 16

The Birth of Ishmael

16Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian slave-girl whose name was Hagar,H8297H87H802H3205H3808H3205H8198H4713H8034H19042and Sarai said to Abram, "You see that the LORD has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my slave-girl; it may be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.H8297H559H87H3068H6113H3205H935H8198H194H1129H87H8085H6963H82973So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave-girl, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife.H8297H87H802H3947H1904H8198H4713H7093H87H3427H6235H8141H776H3667H5414H376H87H8024He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.H935H1904H2029H7200H2029H1404H7043H58695Then Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my slave-girl to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!"H8297H559H87H2555H5414H8198H2436H7200H2029H7043H5869H3068H81996But Abram said to Sarai, "Your slave-girl is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she ran away from her.H87H559H8297H8198H3027H6213H2896H5869H8297H6031H1272H64407The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.H4397H3068H4672H5869H4325H4057H5869H1870H77938And he said, "Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She said, "I am running away from my mistress Sarai."H559H1904H8297H8198H335H935H3212H559H1272H6440H1404H82979The angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit to her."H4397H3068H559H7725H1404H6031H302710The angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will so greatly multiply your offspring that they cannot be counted for multitude."H4397H3068H559H7235H2233H7235H5608H723011And the angel of the LORD said to her, "Now you have conceived and shall bear a son; you shall call him Ishmael, for the LORD has given heed to your affliction.H4397H3068H559H2009H2030H3205H1121H7121H8034H3458H3068H8085H604012He shall be a wild ass of a man, with his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; and he shall live at odds with all his kin."H6501H120H3027H3027H7931H6440H25113So she named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are El-roi"; for she said, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?"H7121H8034H3068H1696H410H7210H559H1988H7200H310H721014Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.H875H7121H883H2416H6946H126015Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.H1904H3205H87H1121H87H7121H1121H8034H1904H3205H345816Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.H87H8084H8141H8337H8141H1121H1904H3205H3458H87

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
