The Seventh Day

2With this the heavens and the earth were completed, including all of their vast array.H8064H776H3615H6635 2By the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing, so on the seventh day he stopped working on everything that he had done.H7637H3117H430H3615H4399H6213H7673H7637H3117H4399H6213 3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God stopped working on what he had been creating.H430H1288H7637H3117H6942H3588H7673H4399H430H1254H6213

Humans in the Garden

4These are the records of how the heavens and the earth were created. OnthedaythattheLORD God made the earth and the heavens,H428H8435H8064H776H1254H3117H3068H430H6213H776H8064 5no shrubs had yet grown in the meadows of the earth and no vegetation had sprouted, because the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there were no human beings to work the ground.H7880H7704H2962H776H6212H7704H2962H6779H3588H3068H430H3808H4305H776H369H120H5647H127 6Instead, an underground stream would rise from the earth and water the surface of the ground.H5927H108H4480H776H8248H6440H127 7So the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground, breathed life into his lungs, and the man became a living being.H3068H430H3335H120H6083H4480H127H5301H639H5397H2416H120H2416H5315 8The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, where he placed the man whom he had formed.H3068H430H5193H1588H6924H5731H8033H7760H120H834H3335 9The LORD God caused every tree that is both beautiful and suitable for food to spring up out of the ground. The tree of life was also in the middle of the garden, along with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.H4480H127H6779H3068H430H6779H6086H2530H4758H2896H3978H6086H2416H8432H1588H6086H1847H2896H7451 10A river flows from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides, becoming four branches.H5104H3318H5731H8248H1588H6504H702H7218 11The name of the first one is Pishon - it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.H8034H259H6376H1931H5437H776H2341H834H2091 12The gold of that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are also found there.H2091H1931H776H2896H916H7718H68 13The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.H8034H8145H5104H1521H5437H776H3568 14The third river is named the Tigris; it flows to the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.H8034H7992H5104H2313H1980H6926H804H7243H5104H6578 15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden in order to have him work it and guard it.H3068H430H3947H120H3240H1588H5731H5647H8104 16The LORD God commanded the man: "You may freely eat from every tree of the garden,H3068H430H6680H120H559H6086H1588H398H398 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because you will certainly die during the day that you eat from it."H6086H1847H2896H7451H398H3117H398H4191H4191

The Creation of the Woman

18Later, the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a companion corresponding to him."H3068H430H559H2896H120H1961H6213H5828 19So after the LORD God formed from the ground every wild animal and every bird that flies, he brought each of them to the man to see what he would call it. Whatever the man called each living creature became its name.H127H3068H430H3335H2416H7704H5775H8064H935H120H7200H7121H120H7121H2416H5315H1931H8034 20The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds that fly, and to every wild animal, but there was not found for the man any companion corresponding to him,H120H7121H8034H929H5775H8064H2416H7704H120H4672H5828 21so the LORD God caused a deep sleep to overshadow the man.19 When the man was asleep, he removed one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh where it had been.H3068H430H5307H8639H5307H121H3462H3947H259H6763H5462H1320 22Then the Lord God formed the rib that he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.219H6763H3068H430H3947H120H1129H802H935H120 23Later, the man remarked, "This at last is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. This one will be called 'Woman,' because she was taken from Man."H120H559H2063H6471H6106H6106H1320H1320H2063H7121H802H2063H3947H376 24Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they will become one flesh.H3651H376H5800H1H517H1692H802H259H1320 25Even though both the man and his wife were naked, they were not ashamed.H8147H6174H120H802H954
