Jacob Meets Esau

33Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming toward him with 400 men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two female slaves.H3290H5375H5869H7200H6215H935H702H3967H376H2673H3206H3812H7354H8147H8198 2He put the female slaves first, Leah and her sons next, and Rachel and Joseph last.H7760H8198H3206H7223H3812H3206H314H7354H3130H314 3He himself went on ahead and bowed to the ground seven times until he approached his brother.H5674H6440H7812H776H7651H6471H5066H251 4But Esau ran to meet him, hugged him, threw his arms around him, and kissed him. Then they wept.H6215H7323H7125H2263H5307H6677H5401H1058 5When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, "Who are these with you?" He answered, "The children God has graciously given your servant."H5375H5869H7200H802H3206H559H428H559H3206H430H2603H5650 6Then the female slaves and their children approached [him] and bowed down.H8198H5066H3206H7812 7Leah and her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down.H3812H3206H5066H7812H310H5066H3130H5066H7354H7812 8So Esau said, "What do you mean by this whole procession I met?" "To find favor with you, my lord," he answered.H559H4264H6298H559H4672H2580H5869H113 9"I have enough, my brother," Esau replied. "Keep what you have."H6215H559H3426H7227H251 10But Jacob said, "No, please! If I have found favor with you, take this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, [and it is] like seeing God's face, since you have accepted me.H3290H559H4672H2580H5869H3947H4503H3027H7200H6440H7200H6440H430H7521 11Please take my present that was brought to you, because God has been gracious to me and I have everything I need." So Jacob urged him until he accepted.H3947H1293H935H430H2603H3605H3426H3605H6484H3947 12Then Esau said, "Let's move on, and I'll go ahead of you."H559H5265H3212H3212 13Jacob replied, "My lord knows that the children are weak, and I have nursing sheep and cattle. If they are driven hard for one day, the whole herd will die.H559H113H3045H3206H7390H6629H1241H5763H1849H259H3117H6629H4191 14Let my lord go ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a pace suited to the livestock and the children, until I come to my lord at Seir."H113H5674H6440H5650H5095H328H7272H4399H6440H3206H7272H935H113H8165 15Esau said, "Let me leave some of my people with you." But he replied, "Why do that? Please indulge me, my lord."H6215H559H3322H5971H559H4100H4672H2580H5869H113 16On that day Esau started on his way back to Seir,H6215H7725H3117H1870H8165 17but Jacob went on to Succoth. He built a house for himself and stalls for his cattle; that is why the place was called Succoth.H3290H5265H5523H1129H1004H6213H5521H4735H8034H4725H7121H5523 18After Jacob came from Paddan-aram, he arrived safely at the Canaanite city of Shechem and camped in front of the city.H3290H935H8004H5892H7927H776H3667H935H6307H2583H6440H5892 19He purchased a section of the field from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for 100 qesitahs, where he had pitched his tent.H7069H2513H7704H5186H168H3027H1121H2544H7927H1H3967H7192 20And he set up an altar there and called it "God, the God of Israel."H5324H4196H7121H415
