Jacob Moves to Bethel

35AND GOD said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. And make there an altar to God Who appeared to you [in a distinct manifestation] when you fled from the presence of Esau your brother.H430H559H3290H6965H5927H1008H3427H6213H4196H410H7200H1272H6440H6215H251 2Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the [images of] strange gods that are among you, and purify yourselves and change [into fresh] garments;H3290H559H1004H5493H5236H430H8432H2891H2498H8071 3Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make there an altar to God Who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me wherever I went.H6965H5927H1008H6213H4196H410H6030H3117H6869H1870H1980 4So they [both young men and women] gave to Jacob all the strange gods they had and their earrings which were [worn as charms against evil] in their ears; and Jacob buried {and} hid them under the oak near Shechem.H5414H3290H5236H430H3027H5141H241H3290H2934H424H7927 5And they journeyed and a terror from God fell on the towns round about them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.H5265H2847H430H5892H5439H7291H310H1121H3290 6So Jacob came to Luz, that is, Bethel, which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people with him.H3290H935H3870H776H3667H1008H5971 7There he built an altar, and called the place El-bethel [God of Bethel], for there God revealed Himself to him when he fled from the presence of his brother.H1129H4196H7121H4725H416H430H1540H1272H6440H251 8But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel under an oak; and the name of it was called Allon-bacuth [oak of weeping].H1683H7259H3243H4191H6912H1008H437H8034H7121H439

Jacob Is Named Israel

9And God [in a distinctly visible manifestation] appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Padan-aram, and declared a blessing on him.H430H7200H3290H935H6307H1288 10Again God said to him, Your name is Jacob [supplanter]; you shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name. So He called him Israel [contender with God].H430H559H8034H3290H8034H7121H3290H3478H8034H7121H8034H3478 11And God said to him, I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you and kings shall be born of your stock;H430H559H410H7706H6509H7235H1471H6951H1471H4428H3318H2504 12The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and to your descendants after you I will give the land.H776H5414H85H3327H5414H2233H310H5414H776 13Then God ascended from him in the place where He talked with him.H430H5927H4725H1696 14And Jacob set up a pillar (monument) in the place where he talked with [God], a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it and he poured oil on it.H3290H5324H4676H4725H1696H4678H68H5258H5262H3332H8081 15And Jacob called the name of the place where God had talked with him Bethel [house of God].H3290H7121H8034H4725H430H1696H1008 16And they journeyed from Bethel and had but a little way to go to Ephrath [Bethlehem] when Rachel suffered the pangs of childbirth and had hard labor.H5265H1008H5750H3530H776H935H672H7354H3205H7185H3205 17When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, Do not be afraid; you shall have this son also.H7185H3205H3205H559H3372H1121 18And as her soul was departing, for she died, she called his name Ben-oni [son of my sorrow]; but his father called him Benjamin [son of the right hand].H5315H3318H4191H7121H8034H1126H1H7121H1144 19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem.H7354H4191H6912H1870H672H1035 20And Jacob set a pillar (monument) on her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.H3290H5324H4676H6900H4678H7354H6900H3117 21Then Israel journeyed on and spread his tent on the other side of the tower of Edar.H3478H5265H5186H168H1973H4026H4029

The Sons of Israel

22When Israel dwelt there, Reuben [his eldest son] went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard about it.
