The Message Help
35God spoke to Jacob: "Go back to Bethel. Stay there and build an altar to the God who revealed himself to you when you were running for your life from your brother Esau."H430H559H3290H6965H5927H1008H3427H6213H4196H410H7200H1272H6440H6215H251 2Jacob told his family and all those who lived with him, "Throw out all the alien gods which you have, take a good bath and put on clean clothes,H3290H559H1004H5493H5236H430H8432H2891H2498H8071 3we're going to Bethel. I'm going to build an altar there to the God who answered me when I was in trouble and has stuck with me everywhere I've gone since."H6965H5927H1008H6213H4196H410H6030H3117H6869H1870H1980 4They turned over to Jacob all the alien gods they'd been holding on to, along with their lucky-charm earrings. Jacob buried them under the oak tree in Shechem.H5414H3290H5236H430H3027H5141H241H3290H2934H424H7927 5Then they set out. A paralyzing fear descended on all the surrounding villages so that they were unable to pursue the sons of Jacob.H5265H2847H430H5892H5439H7291H310H1121H3290 6Jacob and his company arrived at Luz, that is, Bethel, in the land of Canaan.H3290H935H3870H776H3667H1008H5971 7He built an altar there and named it El-Bethel (God-of-Bethel) because that's where God revealed himself to him when he was running from his brother.H1129H4196H7121H4725H416H430H1540H1272H6440H251 8And that's when Rebekah's nurse, Deborah, died. She was buried just below Bethel under the oak tree. It was named Allon-Bacuth (Weeping-Oak).H1683H7259H3243H4191H6912H1008H437H8034H7121H439 9God revealed himself once again to Jacob, after he had come back from Paddan Aram and blessed him:H430H7200H3290H935H6307H1288 10"Your name is Jacob (Heel); but that's your name no longer. From now on your name is Israel (God-Wrestler)."H430H559H8034H3290H8034H7121H3290H3478H8034H7121H8034H3478 11God continued, I am The Strong God. Have children! Flourish! A nation—a whole company of nations!— will come from you. Kings will come from your loins;H430H559H410H7706H6509H7235H1471H6951H1471H4428H3318H2504 12the land I gave Abraham and Isaac I now give to you, and pass it on to your descendants.H776H5414H85H3327H5414H2233H310H5414H776 13And then God was gone, ascended from the place where he had spoken with him.H430H5927H4725H1696 14Jacob set up a stone pillar on the spot where God had spoken with him. He poured a drink offering on it and anointed it with oil.H3290H5324H4676H4725H1696H4678H68H5258H5262H3332H8081 15Jacob dedicated the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel (God's-House).H3290H7121H8034H4725H430H1696H1008 16They left Bethel. They were still quite a ways from Ephrath when Rachel went into labor—hard, hard labor.H5265H1008H5750H3530H776H935H672H7354H3205H7185H3205 17When her labor pains were at their worst, the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid—you have another boy."H7185H3205H3205H559H3372H1121 18With her last breath, for she was now dying, she named him Ben-oni (Son-of-My-Pain), but his father named him Ben-jamin (Son-of-Good-Fortune).H5315H3318H4191H7121H8034H1126H1H7121H1144 19Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem.H7354H4191H6912H1870H672H1035 20Jacob set up a pillar to mark her grave. It is still there today, "Rachel's Grave Stone."H3290H5324H4676H6900H4678H7354H6900H3117 21Israel kept on his way and set up camp at Migdal Eder.H3478H5265H5186H168H1973H4026H4029 22While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went and slept with his father's concubine, Bilhah. And Israel heard of what he did. There were twelve sons of Jacob.H3478H7931H776H7205H3212H7901H1090H1H6370H3478H8085H1121H3290H8147H6240 23The sons by Leah: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun.H1121H3812H7205H3290H1060H8095H3878H3063H3485H2074 24The sons by Rachel: Joseph, Benjamin.H1121H7354H3130H1144 25The sons by Bilhah, Rachel's maid: Dan, Naphtali.H1121H1090H7354H8198H1835H5321 26The sons by Zilpah, Leah's maid: Gad, Asher. These were Jacob's sons, born to him in Paddan Aram.H1121H2153H3812H8198H1410H836H1121H3290H3205H6307 27Finally, Jacob made it back home to his father Isaac at Mamre in Kiriath Arba, present-day Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had lived.H3290H935H3327H1H4471H7153H2275H85H3327H1481 28Isaac was now 180 years old.H3117H3327H3967H8141H8084H8141 29Isaac breathed his last and died—an old man full of years. He was buried with his family by his sons Esau and Jacob.H3327H1478H4191H622H5971H2205H7649H3117H1121H6215H3290H6912
