Joseph and His Brothers

37Jacob continued to live in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived,H3290H3427H776H1H4033H776H3667 2and this is the story of Jacob's family. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, took care of the sheep and goats with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's concubines. He brought bad reports to his father about what his brothers were doing.H8435H3290H3130H6240H7651H8141H1121H7462H6629H251H5288H1121H1090H1121H2153H1H802H3130H935H1H7451H1681 3Jacob loved Joseph more than all his other sons, because he had been born to him when he was old. He made a long robe with full sleeves for him.H3478H157H3130H1121H1121H2208H6213H3801H6446 4When his brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than he loved them, they hated their brother so much that they would not speak to him in a friendly manner.H251H7200H1H157H251H8130H3201H1696H7965 5One time Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him even more.H3130H2492H2472H5046H251H8130H3254 6He said, "Listen to the dream I had.H559H8085H2472H2492 7We were all in the field tying up sheaves of wheat, when my sheaf got up and stood up straight. Yours formed a circle around mine and bowed down to it."H481H8432H485H7704H485H6965H5324H485H5437H7812H485 8"Do you think you are going to be a king and rule over us?" his brothers asked. So they hated him even more because of his dreams and because of what he said about them.H251H559H4427H4427H4910H4910H8130H3254H2472H1697 9Then Joseph had another dream and told his brothers, "I had another dream, in which I saw the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to me."H2492H312H2472H5608H251H559H2492H2472H8121H3394H6240H259H3556H7812 10He also told the dream to his father, and his father scolded him: "What kind of a dream is that? Do you think that your mother, your brothers, and I are going to come and bow down to you?"H5608H1H251H1H1605H559H2472H2492H517H251H935H935H7812H776 11Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about the whole matter.H251H7065H1H8104H1697

Joseph Is Sold and Taken to Egypt

12One day when Joseph's brothers had gone to Shechem to take care of their father's flock,H251H3212H7462H1H6629H7927 13Jacob said to Joseph, "I want you to go to Shechem, where your brothers are taking care of the flock." Joseph answered, "I am ready."H3478H559H3130H251H7462H7927H3212H7971H559 14His father told him, "Go and see if your brothers are safe and if the flock is all right; then come back and tell me." So his father sent him on his way from Hebron Valley. Joseph arrived at ShechemH559H3212H7200H7965H251H7965H6629H7725H1697H7725H7971H6010H2275H935H7927 15and was wandering around in the country when a man saw him and asked him, "What are you looking for?"H376H4672H8582H7704H376H7592H559H1245 16"I am looking for my brothers, who are taking care of their flock," he answered. "Can you tell me where they are?"H559H1245H251H5046H375H7462 17The man said, "They have already left. I heard them say that they were going to Dothan." So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.H376H559H5265H2088H8085H559H3212H1886H3130H3212H310H251H4672H1886 18They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted against him and decided to kill him.H7200H7350H7126H5230H4191 19They said to one another, "Here comes that dreamer.H559H376H251H1976H1167H2472H935 20Come on now, let's kill him and throw his body into one of the dry wells. We can say that a wild animal killed him. Then we will see what becomes of his dreams."H3212H2026H7993H259H953H559H7451H2416H398H7200H2472 21Reuben heard them and tried to save Joseph. "Let's not kill him," he said.H7205H8085H5337H3027H559H5221H5315 22"Just throw him into this well in the wilderness, but don't hurt him." He said this, planning to save him from them and send him back to his father.H7205H559H8210H1818H7993H953H4057H7971H3027H5337H3027H7725H1H7725 23When Joseph came up to his brothers, they ripped off his long robe with full sleeves.H3130H935H251H6584H853H3130H854H3801H3801H6446 24Then they took him and threw him into the well, which was dry.H3947H7993H953H953H7386H4325 25While they were eating, they suddenly saw a group of Ishmaelites traveling from Gilead to Egypt. Their camels were loaded with spices and resins.H3427H398H3899H5375H5869H7200H736H3459H935H1568H1581H5375H5219H6875H3910H1980H3381H4714 26Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain by killing our brother and covering up the murder?H3063H559H251H1215H2026H251H3680H1818 27Let's sell him to these Ishmaelites. Then we won't have to hurt him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed,H3212H4376H3459H3027H251H1320H251H8085 28and when some Midianite traders came by, the brothers pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.H5674H4084H582H5503H4900H5927H3130H953H4376H3130H3459H6242H3701H935H3130H4714 29When Reuben came back to the well and found that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes in sorrow.H7205H7725H953H3130H953H7167H899 30He returned to his brothers and said, "The boy is not there! What am I going to do?"H7725H251H559H3206H575H935 31Then they killed a goat and dipped Joseph's robe in its blood.H3947H3130H3801H7819H8163H5795H2881H3801H1818 32They took the robe to their father and said, "We found this. Does it belong to your son?"H7971H3801H6446H935H1H559H4672H5234H1121H3801 33He recognized it and said, "Yes, it is his! Some wild animal has killed him. My son Joseph has been torn to pieces!"H5234H559H1121H3801H7451H2416H398H3130H2963H2963 34Jacob tore his clothes in sorrow and put on sackcloth.
