Isaiah 36

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

36In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, King Sennacherib of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.H702H6240H8141H4428H2396H5576H4428H804H5927H1219H5892H3063H86102The king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. He stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Fuller's Field.H4428H804H7971H7262H3923H3389H4428H2396H3515H2426H5975H8585H5945H1295H4546H3526H77043And there came out to him Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder.H3318H471H2518H1121H1004H7644H5608H3098H623H1121H21424The Rabshakeh said to them, "Say to Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you base this confidence of yours?H7262H559H559H2396H559H1419H4428H4428H804H986H9825Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me?H559H8193H1697H6098H1369H4421H982H47756See, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.H982H4938H7533H7070H4714H376H5564H935H3709H5344H6547H4428H4714H9827But if you say to me, 'We rely on the LORD our God,' is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar'?H559H982H3068H430H1116H4196H2396H5493H559H3063H3389H7812H6440H41968Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.H6148H113H4428H804H5414H505H5483H3201H5414H73929How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master's servants, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?H7725H6440H259H6346H6996H113H5650H982H4714H7393H657110Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it."H5927H1107H3068H776H7843H3068H559H5927H776H784311Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall."H559H471H7644H3098H7262H1696H5650H762H8085H1696H3066H241H5971H234612But the Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the people sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?"H7262H559H113H7971H113H1696H1697H582H3427H2346H398H2716H6675H8354H4325H7272H789013Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!H7262H5975H7121H1419H6963H3066H559H8085H1697H1419H4428H4428H80414Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you.H559H4428H2396H5377H3201H533715Do not let Hezekiah make you rely on the LORD by saying, The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.'H2396H982H3068H559H3068H5337H5337H5892H5414H3027H4428H80416Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: 'Make your peace with me and come out to me; then everyone of you will eat from your own vine and your own fig tree and drink water from your own cistern,H8085H2396H559H4428H804H6213H1293H3318H398H376H1612H376H8384H8354H376H4325H95317until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.H935H3947H776H776H776H1715H8492H776H3899H375418Do not let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, The LORD will save us. Has any of the gods of the nations saved their land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?H2396H5496H559H3068H5337H376H430H1471H5337H776H3027H4428H80419Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?H430H2574H774H430H5617H5337H8111H302720Who among all the gods of these countries have saved their countries out of my hand, that the LORD should save Jerusalem out of my hand?'"H430H776H5337H776H3027H3068H5337H3389H302721But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king's command was, "Do not answer him."H2790H6030H1697H4428H4687H559H603022Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.H935H471H1121H2518H1004H7644H5608H3098H1121H623H2142H2396H899H7167H5046H1697H7262

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
