Sennacherib’s Threat and Hezekiah’s Prayer

8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.H7262H7725H4672H4428H804H3898H3841H8085H5265H3923 9And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,H8085H559H8640H4428H3568H3318H3898H8085H7971H4397H2396H559 10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.H559H2396H4428H3063H559H430H982H5377H559H3389H5414H3027H4428H804 11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?H8085H4428H804H6213H776H2763H5337 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?H430H1471H5337H1H7843H1470H2771H7530H1121H5729H8515 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?H4428H2574H4428H774H4428H5892H5617H2012H5755 14And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.H2396H3947H5612H3027H4397H7121H2396H5927H1004H3068H6566H6440H3068 15And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,H2396H6419H3068H559 16O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.H3068H6635H430H3478H3427H3742H430H4467H776H6213H8064H776 17Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.H5186H241H3068H8085H6491H5869H3068H7200H8085H1697H5576H7971H2778H2416H430 18Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,H551H3068H4428H804H2717H776H776 19And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.H5414H430H784H430H4639H120H3027H6086H68H6 20Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.H3068H430H3467H3027H4467H776H3045H3068

The Word of the Lord Concerning Sennacherib

21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:H3470H1121H531H7971H2396H559H559H3068H430H3478H6419H5576H4428H804 22This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.H1697H3068H1696H1330H1323H6726H959H3932H1323H3389H5128H7218H310 23Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.H2778H1442H7311H6963H5375H5869H4791H6918H3478 24By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.H3027H5650H2778H136H559H7230H7393H5927H4791H2022H3411H3844H3772H6967H730H4005H1265H935H4791H7093H3293H3760 25I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.H6979H8354H4325H3709H6471H2717H2975H4693 26Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.H8085H7350H6213H6924H3117H3335H935H7582H1219H5892H5327H1530 27Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.H3427H7116H3027H2865H954H6212H7704H3419H1877H2682H1406H7709H6440H7054 28But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.H3045H3427H3318H935H7264 29Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.H7264H7600H5927H241H7760H2397H639H4964H8193H7725H1870H935 30And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.H226H398H8141H5599H8145H8141H7823H7992H8141H2232H7114H5193H3754H398H6529 31And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:H7604H6413H1004H3063H3254H8328H4295H6213H6529H4605 32For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.H3389H3318H7611H6413H2022H6726H7068H3068H6635H6213 33Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.H559H3068H4428H804H935H5892H3384H2671H6923H4043H8210H5550 34By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.H1870H935H7725H935H5892H5002H3068 35For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.H1598H5892H3467H5650H1732

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death

36Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.H4397H3068H3318H5221H4264H804H3967H8084H2568H505H7925H1242H4191H6297 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.H5576H4428H804H5265H3212H7725H3427H5210 38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.H7812H1004H5268H430H152H8272H1121H5221H2719H4422H776H780H634H1121H4427
