King James Version

The Scroll Read in the Temple

36And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,H7243H8141H3079H1121H2977H4428H3063H1697H3414H3068H559 2Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.H3947H4039H5612H3789H1697H1696H3478H3063H1471H3117H1696H3117H2977H3117 3It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.H1004H3063H8085H7451H2803H6213H7725H376H7451H1870H5545H5771H2403 4Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.H3414H7121H1263H1121H5374H1263H3789H6310H3414H1697H3068H1696H4039H5612 5And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the LORD:H3414H6680H1263H559H6113H3201H935H1004H3068 6Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.H935H7121H4039H3789H6310H1697H3068H241H5971H3068H1004H6685H3117H7121H241H3063H935H5892 7It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.H5307H8467H6440H3068H7725H376H7451H1870H1419H639H2534H3068H1696H5971 8And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORD's house.H1263H1121H5374H6213H3414H5030H6680H7121H5612H1697H3068H3068H1004 9And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.H2549H8141H3079H1121H2977H4428H3063H8671H2320H7121H6685H6440H3068H5971H3389H5971H935H5892H3063H3389 10Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD's house, in the ears of all the people.H7121H1263H5612H1697H3414H1004H3068H3957H1587H1121H8227H5608H5945H2691H6607H2319H8179H3068H1004H241H5971

The Scroll Read in the Palace

11When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD,H4321H1121H1587H1121H8227H8085H5612H1697H3068 12Then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.H3381H4428H1004H5608H3957H8269H3427H476H5608H1806H1121H8098H494H1121H5907H1587H1121H8227H6667H1121H2608H8269 13Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.H4321H5046H1697H8085H1263H7121H5612H241H5971 14Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.H8269H7971H3065H1121H5418H1121H8018H1121H3570H1263H559H3947H3027H4039H7121H241H5971H3212H1263H1121H5374H3947H4039H3027H935 15And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.H559H3427H7121H241H1263H7121H241 16Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.H8085H1697H6342H413H376H7453H559H1263H5046H5046H4428H1697 17And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?H7592H1263H559H5046H3789H1697H6310 18Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.H1263H559H7121H1697H6310H3789H1773H5612 19Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.H559H8269H1263H3212H5641H3414H376H3045H375

The King Destroys Jeremiah’s Scroll

20And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.H935H4428H2691H6485H4039H3957H476H5608H5046H1697H241H4428 21So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.H4428H7971H3065H3947H4039H3947H476H5608H3957H3065H7121H241H4428H241H8269H5975H5921H4428 22Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.H4428H3427H1004H2779H8671H2320H254H1197H6440 23And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.H3065H7121H7969H702H1817H7167H8593H5608H7993H784H254H4039H8552H784H254 24Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.H6342H7167H899H4428H5650H8085H1697 25Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.H494H1806H1587H6293H4428H8313H4039H8085 26But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.H4428H6680H3396H1121H4429H8304H1121H5837H8018H1121H5655H3947H1263H5608H3414H5030H3068H5641

Jeremiah Rewrites the Scroll

27Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,H1697H3068H3414H310H4428H8313H4039H1697H1263H3789H6310H3414H559 28Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.H3947H7725H312H4039H3789H7223H1697H7223H4039H3079H4428H3063H8313 29And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?H559H3079H4428H3063H559H3068H8313H4039H559H3789H559H4428H894H935H935H7843H776H7673H120H929 30Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.H559H3068H3079H4428H3063H3427H3678H1732H5038H7993H3117H2721H3915H7140 31And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.H6485H2233H5650H5771H935H3427H3389H376H3063H7451H1696H8085 32Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.H3947H3414H312H4039H5414H1263H5608H1121H5374H3789H6310H3414H1697H5612H3079H4428H3063H8313H784H3254H7227H1992H1697
