Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very endc.G1161G4253G1859G3957G2424G1492G3754G846G5610G2064G2443G3327G1537G5127G2889G4314G3962G25G2398G3588G1722G2889G25G846G1519G50562It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judasc, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.G2532G1173G1096G1228G2235G906G1519G2588G2455G2469G4613G2443G3860G8463Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.G2424G1492G3754G3962G1325G3956G1519G846G5495G2532G3754G1831G575G2316G2532G5217G4314G23164So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist,G1453G1537G1173G2532G5087G2440G2532G2983G3012G1241G14385and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.G1534G906G5204G1519G3537G2532G756G3538G3101G4228G2532G1591G3012G3739G2258G12416When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"G3767G2064G4314G4613G4074G2532G1565G3004G846G2962G3538G4771G3538G3450G42287Jesus replied, "You don't understand now what I am doing, but someday you will."G2424G611G2532G2036G846G3739G1473G4160G4771G1492G3756G737G1161G1097G3326G50238"No," Peter protested, "you will never ever wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "Unless I wash you, you won't belong to me."G4074G3004G846G3538G1519G165G3364G3538G3450G4228G2424G611G846G3362G3538G4571G3362G2192G3756G3313G3326G17009Simon Peter exclaimed, "Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!"G4613G4074G3004G846G2962G3361G3450G4228G3440G235G2532G5495G2532G277610Jesus replied, "A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feetc, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you."G2424G3004G846G3068G5532G3756G2192G2228G3538G4228G235G2076G2513G3650G2532G5210G2075G2513G235G3780G395611For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, "Not all of you are clean."G1063G1492G3588G3860G846G5124G1223G2036G2075G3780G3956G251312After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing?G3767G3753G3538G846G4228G2532G2983G846G2440G377G3825G2036G846G1097G5101G4160G521313You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that's what I am.G5210G5455G3165G1320G2532G2962G2532G3004G2573G1063G151014And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet.G1487G1473G3767G2962G2532G1320G3538G5216G4228G5210G2532G3784G3538G240G422815I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.G1063G1325G5213G5262G2443G5210G4160G2531G2532G1473G4160G521316I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.G281G281G3004G5213G1401G2076G3756G3187G846G2962G3761G652G3187G3992G84617Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.G1487G1492G5023G3107G2075G1437G4160G846

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18"I am not saying these things to all of you; I know the ones I have chosen. But this fulfills the Scripture that says, 'The one who eats my food has turned against me.'cG3004G3756G4012G5216G3956G1473G1492G3739G1586G235G2443G1124G4137G5176G740G3326G1700G1869G846G4418G1909G169119I tell you this beforehand, so that when it happens you will believe that I AM the Messiahc.G575G737G3004G5213G4253G1096G2443G3752G1096G4100G3754G1473G151020I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me."G281G281G3004G5213G2983G1437G5100G3992G2983G1691G1161G2983G1691G2983G3992G316521Now Jesus was deeply troubledc, and he exclaimed, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!"G2424G2036G5023G2036G5015G4151G2532G3140G2532G2036G281G281G3004G5213G3754G1520G1537G5216G3860G316522The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean.G3767G3101G991G1519G240G639G4012G5101G300423The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the tablec.G1161G2258G345G1722G2424G2859G1520G846G3101G3739G2424G2524Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, "Who's he talking about?"G4613G4074G3767G3506G5129G4441G5101G302G1498G4012G3739G300425So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, "Lord, who is it?"G1565G1161G1968G1909G2424G4738G3004G846G2962G5101G207626Jesus responded, "It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl." And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.G2424G611G1565G2076G3739G1929G5596G1473G911G2532G1686G5596G1325G2455G2469G461327When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, "Hurry and do what you're going to do."G2532G3326G5596G5119G4567G1525G1519G1565G3767G3004G2424G846G3739G4160G4160G503228None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.G1161G3762G345G1097G4314G5101G2036G5124G84629Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.G1063G5100G1380G1893G2455G2192G1101G3754G2424G3004G846G59G3739G2192G5532G1519G1859G2228G2443G1325G5100G443430So Judas left at once, going out into the night.G1565G3767G2983G5596G1831G2112G1831G1161G2258G3571

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, "The time has come for the Son of Manc to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him.G3767G3753G1831G2424G3004G3568G1392G5207G444G1392G2532G2316G1392G1722G84632And since God receives glory because of the Sonc, he will soon give glory to the Son.G1487G2316G1392G1722G846G2316G1392G2532G1392G846G1722G1438G2532G1392G2117G1392G84633Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can't come where I am going.G5040G2089G3397G1510G3326G5216G2212G3165G2532G2531G2036G2453G3754G3699G1473G5217G5210G3756G1410G2064G2532G737G3004G521334So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.G2537G1785G1325G5213G2443G25G240G2531G25G5209G2443G5210G2532G25G24035Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."G1722G5129G1097G3956G1097G3754G2075G1699G3101G1437G2192G26G1722G24036Simon Peter asked, "Lord, where are you going?" And Jesus replied, "You can't go with me now, but you will follow me later."G4613G4074G3004G846G2962G4226G5217G2424G611G846G3699G5217G1410G3756G190G3427G3568G1161G190G3427G530537"But why can't I come now, Lord?" he asked. "I'm ready to die for you."G4074G3004G846G2962G1302G3756G1410G190G4671G737G5087G3450G5590G5228G467538Jesus answered, "Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter-before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.G2424G611G846G5087G4675G5590G5228G1700G281G281G3004G4671G220G5455G3364G5455G2193G3739G533G3165G5151
