The Land Divided West of the Jordan

14The remaining tribes of Israel received land in Canaan as allotted by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the tribal leaders.H1121H3478H5157H776H3667H499H3548H3091H1121H5126H7218H1H4294H1121H3478H5157 2These nine and a half tribes received their grants of land by means of sacred lots, in accordance with the LORD's command through Moses.H1486H5159H3068H6680H3027H4872H8672H4294H2677H4294 3Moses had already given a grant of land to the two and a half tribes on the east side of the Jordan River, but he had given the Levites no such allotment.H4872H5414H5159H8147H4294H2677H4294H5676H3383H3881H5414H5159H8432 4The descendants of Joseph had become two separate tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. And the Levites were given no land at all, only towns to live in with surrounding pasturelands for their livestock and all their possessions.H1121H3130H8147H4294H4519H669H5414H2506H3881H776H5892H3427H4054H4735H7075 5So the land was distributed in strict accordance with the LORD's commands to Moses.H3068H6680H4872H1121H3478H6213H2505H776

Caleb Requests His Land

6A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, "Remember what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea.H1121H3063H5066H3091H1537H3612H1121H3312H7074H559H3045H1697H3068H1696H4872H376H430H182H182H6947 7I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report,H705H8141H1121H4872H5650H3068H7971H6947H7270H776H7725H1697H7725H3824 8but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the LORD my God.H251H5927H3820H5971H4529H4390H310H3068H430 9So that day Moses solemnly promised me, 'The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the LORD my God.'H4872H7650H3117H559H776H7272H1869H5159H1121H5704H5769H4390H310H3068H430 10"Now, as you can see, the LORD has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise—even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old.H3068H2421H1696H705H2568H8141H227H3068H1696H1697H4872H3478H1980H4057H3117H8084H2568H8141H1121 11I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.H2389H3117H3117H4872H7971H3581H3581H4421H3318H935 12So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said."H5414H2022H3068H1696H3117H8085H3117H6062H5892H1419H1219H194H3068H854H3423H3068H1696 13So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.H3091H1288H5414H3612H1121H3312H2275H5159 14Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite because he wholeheartedly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.H2275H5159H3612H1121H3312H7074H3117H4390H310H3068H430H3478 15(Previously Hebron had been called Kiriath-arba. It had been named after Arba, a great hero of the descendants of Anak.) And the land had rest from war.H8034H2275H6440H7153H1419H120H6062H776H8252H4421
