Joshua 10

The Sun Stands Still

10When King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,H139H4428H3389H8085H3588H3091H3920H5857H2763H6213H3405H4428H6213H5857H4428H3427H1391H7999H3478H71302he became greatly frightened, because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities, and was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors.H3372H3966H1391H1419H5892H259H4467H5892H1419H5857H582H13683So King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent a message to King Hoham of Hebron, to King Piram of Jarmuth, to King Japhia of Lachish, and to King Debir of Eglon, saying,H139H4428H3389H7971H1944H4428H2275H6502H4428H3412H3309H4428H3923H1688H4428H5700H5594"Come up and help me, and let us attack Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites."H5927H5826H5221H1391H7999H3091H1121H34785Then the five kings of the Amorites—the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon—gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and camped against Gibeon, and made war against it.H2568H4428H567H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700H622H5927H4264H2583H1391H38986And the Gibeonites sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hill country are gathered against us."H582H1391H7971H3091H4264H1537H559H7503H3027H5650H5927H4120H3467H5826H4428H567H3427H2022H69087So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting force with him, all the mighty warriors.H3091H5927H1537H5971H4421H1368H24288The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of them shall stand before you."H3068H559H3091H3372H5414H3027H376H5975H64409So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal.H3091H935H6597H5927H1537H391510And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon, chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.H3068H2000H6440H3478H5221H1419H4347H1391H7291H1870H4608H1032H5221H5825H471911As they fled before Israel, while they were going down the slope of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down huge stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died because of the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.H5127H6440H3478H4174H1032H3068H7993H1419H68H8064H5825H4191H7227H4191H1259H68H834H1121H3478H2026H271912On the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the valley of Aijalon."H1696H3091H3068H3117H3068H5414H567H6440H1121H3478H559H5869H3478H8121H1826H1391H3394H6010H35713And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in mid-heaven, and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.H8121H1826H3394H5975H1471H5358H341H1931H3789H5612H3477H8121H5975H2677H8064H213H935H8549H311714There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded a human voice; for the LORD fought for Israel.H3117H6440H310H3068H8085H6963H376H3068H3898H347815Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

Five Kings Defeated

16Meanwhile, these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.H2568H4428H5127H2244H4631H471917And it was told Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."H5046H3091H559H2568H4428H4672H2244H4631H471918Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them;H3091H559H1556H1419H68H6310H4631H6485H582H810419but do not stay there yourselves; pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Do not let them enter their towns, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand."H5975H7291H310H341H2179H5414H935H5892H3068H430H5414H302720When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great slaughter on them, until they were wiped out, and when the survivors had entered into the fortified towns,H3091H1121H3478H3615H5221H3966H1419H4347H8552H8300H8277H935H4013H589221all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah; no one dared to speak against any of the Israelites.H5971H7725H4264H3091H4719H7965H2782H3956H376H1121H347822Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave."H559H3091H6605H6310H4631H3318H2568H4428H463123They did so, and brought the five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.H6213H3318H2568H4428H4631H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H570024When they brought the kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the Israelites, and said to the chiefs of the warriors who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." Then they came near and put their feet on their necks.H3318H4428H3091H3091H7121H376H3478H559H7101H582H4421H1980H7126H7760H7272H6677H4428H7126H7760H7272H667725And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous; for thus the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."H3091H559H3372H2865H2388H553H3068H6213H341H389826Afterward Joshua struck them down and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening.H310H3091H5221H4191H8518H2568H6086H8518H6086H615327At sunset Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves; they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.H6256H935H8121H3091H6680H3381H6086H7993H4631H2244H7760H1419H68H4631H6310H6106H311728Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3117H3091H3920H4719H5221H6310H2719H4428H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H4719H6213H4428H340529Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.H3091H5674H4719H3478H3841H3898H384130The LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left no one remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3068H5414H4428H3027H3478H5221H6310H2719H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H6213H4428H340531Next Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it.H3091H5674H3841H3478H3923H2583H389832The LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.H3068H5414H3923H3027H3478H3920H8145H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H6213H384133Then King Horam of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, leaving him no survivors.H2036H4428H1507H5927H5826H3923H3091H5221H5971H7604H830034From Lachish Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it;H3923H3091H5674H5700H3478H2583H389835and they took it that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish.H3920H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H2763H3117H6213H392336Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; they assaulted it,H3091H5927H5700H3478H2275H389837and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it; he left no one remaining, just as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it with every person in it.H3920H5221H6310H2719H4428H5892H5315H7604H8300H6213H5700H2763H531538Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it,H3091H7725H3478H1688H389839and he took it with its king and all its towns; they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining; just as he had done to Hebron, and, as he had done to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.H3920H4428H5892H5221H6310H2719H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H2275H6213H1688H4428H6213H3841H442840So Joshua defeated the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left no one remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.H3091H5221H776H2022H5045H8219H794H4428H7604H8300H2763H5397H3068H430H3478H668041And Joshua defeated them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.H3091H5221H6947H5804H776H1657H139142Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.H4428H776H3091H3920H259H6471H3068H430H3478H3898H347843Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
