The Continuing Conquest of Canaan

1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, "Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?"H310H4194H3091H1121H3478H7592H3068H559H5927H3669H8462H38982And the LORD said, "Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand."H3068H559H3063H5927H5414H776H30273So Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me to my allotted territory, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I will likewise go with you to your allotted territory." And Simeon went with him.H3063H559H8095H251H5927H1486H3898H3669H1980H1486H8095H32124Then Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they killed ten thousand men at Bezek.H3063H5927H3068H5414H3669H6522H3027H5221H966H6235H505H3765And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him; and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.H4672H137H966H3898H5221H3669H65226Then Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.H137H5127H7291H310H270H7112H931H3027H72727And Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.H137H559H7657H4428H931H3027H7272H7112H3950H7979H6213H430H7999H935H3389H41918Now the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it; they struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.H1121H3063H3898H3389H3920H5221H6310H2719H7971H5892H7849And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the mountains, in the South, and in the lowland.H310H1121H3063H3381H3898H3669H3427H2022H5045H821910Then Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron. (Now the name of Hebron was formerly Kirjath Arba.) And they killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.H3063H3212H3669H3427H2275H8034H2275H6440H7153H5221H8344H289H852611From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir was formerly Kirjath Sepher.)H3212H3427H1688H8034H1688H6440H715812Then Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah as wife."H3612H559H5221H7158H3920H5414H5915H1323H80213And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife.H6274H1121H7073H3612H6996H251H3920H5414H5915H1323H80214Now it happened, when she came to him, that she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"H935H5496H7592H1H7704H6795H2543H3612H55915So she said to him, "Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.H559H3051H1293H5414H5045H776H5414H1543H4325H3612H5414H5942H1543H8482H154316Now the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up from the City of Palms with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which lies in the South near Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.H1121H7017H4872H2859H5927H5892H8558H5899H1121H3063H4057H3063H5045H6166H3212H3427H854H597117And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.H3063H3212H8095H251H5221H3669H3427H6857H2763H8034H5892H7121H276718Also Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.H3063H3920H5804H1366H831H1366H6138H136619So the LORD was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had chariots of iron.H3068H3063H3423H2022H3808H3423H3427H6010H7393H127020And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. Then he expelled from there the three sons of Anak.H5414H2275H3612H4872H1696H3423H7969H1121H606121But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.H1121H1144H3423H2983H3427H3389H2983H3427H1121H1144H3389H311722And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.H1004H3130H5927H1008H306823So the house of Joseph sent men to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city was formerly Luz.)H1004H3130H8446H1008H8034H5892H6440H387024And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, "Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will show you mercy."H8104H7200H376H3318H5892H559H7200H3996H5892H6213H261725So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.H7200H3996H5892H5221H5892H6310H2719H7971H376H494026And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.H376H3212H776H2850H1129H5892H7121H8034H3870H8034H3117

Incomplete Conquest of the Land

27However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.H4519H3423H1052H1323H8590H1323H3427H1756H1323H3427H2991H1323H3427H4023H1323H3669H2974H3427H77628And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.H3478H2388H7760H3669H4522H3423H342329Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.H669H3423H3669H3427H1507H3669H3427H1507H713030Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute.H2074H3423H3427H7003H3427H5096H3669H3427H7130H452231Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.H836H3423H3427H5910H3427H6721H303H392H2462H663H734032So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.H843H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H342333Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.H5321H3423H3427H1053H3427H1043H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H3427H1053H1043H452234And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;H567H3905H1121H1835H2022H5414H3381H601035and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they were put under tribute.H567H2974H3427H2022H2776H357H8169H3027H1004H3130H3513H452236Now the boundary of the Amorites was from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.H1366H567H4608H4610H5553H4605
