Mark 15

Standing Before Pilate

15At dawn's first light, the high priests, with the religious leaders and scholars, arranged a conference with the entire Jewish Council. After tying Jesus securely, they took him out and presented him to Pilate.G2532G2112G1909G4404G749G4160G4824G3326G4245G2532G1122G2532G3650G4892G1210G2424G667G2532G3860G40912Pilate asked him, "Are you the 'King of the Jews'?" He answered, "If you say so."G2532G4091G1905G846G1488G4771G935G2453G1161G611G2036G846G4771G30043The high priests let loose a barrage of accusations.G2532G749G2723G846G4183G1161G846G611G37624Pilate asked again, "Aren't you going to answer anything? That's quite a list of accusations."G1161G4091G1905G846G3825G3004G611G3756G3762G2396G4214G2649G46755Still, he said nothing. Pilate was impressed, really impressed.G1161G2424G3765G611G3762G5620G4091G22966It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for.G1161G2596G1859G630G846G1520G1198G3746G1547There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome.G1161G2258G3004G912G1210G3326G4955G3748G4160G5408G1722G47148As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner,G2532G3793G310G756G154G2531G104G4160G8469Pilate anticipated them: "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?"G1161G4091G611G846G3004G2309G630G5213G935G245310Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.G1063G1097G3754G749G3860G846G1223G535511But the high priests by then had worked up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas.G1161G749G383G3793G2443G3123G630G912G84612Pilate came back, "So what do I do with this man you call King of the Jews?"G1161G4091G611G2036G3825G846G5101G2309G3767G4160G3739G3004G935G245313They yelled, "Nail him to a cross!"G1161G2896G3825G4717G84614Pilate objected, "But for what crime?" But they yelled all the louder, "Nail him to a cross!"G1161G4091G3004G846G1063G5101G2556G4160G1161G2896G4056G4717G84615Pilate gave the crowd what it wanted, set Barabbas free and turned Jesus over for whipping and crucifixion.G1161G4091G1014G2425G4160G3793G630G912G846G2532G3860G2424G5417G2443G471716The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade.G1161G4757G520G846G520G2080G833G3603G4232G2532G4779G3650G468617They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thorn bush on his head.G2532G1746G846G4209G2532G4120G4735G174G4060G84618Then they began their mockery: "Bravo, King of the Jews!"G2532G756G782G846G5463G935G245319They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship.G2532G5180G846G2776G2563G2532G1716G846G2532G5087G1119G4352G84620After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.G2532G3753G1702G846G1562G4209G846G2532G1746G2398G2440G1746G846G2532G1806G846G1806G2443G4717G846

The Crucifixion

21There was a man walking by, coming from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry Jesus' cross.G2532G29G5100G4613G2956G3855G2064G575G68G3962G223G2532G4504G2443G142G846G471622The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha, meaning "Skull Hill."G2532G5342G846G1909G5117G1115G3739G2076G3177G5117G289823They offered him a mild painkiller (wine mixed with myrrh), but he wouldn't take it.G2532G1325G846G4095G3631G4669G1161G2983G375624And they nailed him to the cross. They divided up his clothes and threw dice to see who would get them.G2532G4717G846G1266G846G2440G906G2819G1909G846G5101G5101G14225They nailed him up at nine o'clock in the morning.G1161G2258G5154G5610G2532G4717G84626The charge against him—THE KING OF THE JEWS—was printed on a poster.G2532G1923G846G156G2258G1924G935G245327Along with him, they crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left.G2532G4862G846G4717G1417G3027G1520G1537G1188G2532G1520G1537G846G217628(OMITTED TEXT)G2532G1124G4137G3588G3004G2532G3049G3326G45929People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: "You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—G2532G3899G987G846G2795G846G2776G2532G3004G3758G2647G3485G2532G3618G1722G5140G225030so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!"G4982G4572G2532G2597G575G471631The high priests, along with the religion scholars, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: "He saved others—but he can't save himself!G1161G3668G2532G749G1702G3004G4314G240G3326G1122G4982G243G1438G3756G1410G498232Messiah, is he? King of Israel? Then let him climb down from that cross. We'll all become believers then!" Even the men crucified alongside him joined in the mockery.G2597G5547G935G2474G2597G3568G575G4716G2443G1492G2532G4100G2532G4957G846G3679G84633At noon the sky became extremely dark.G1161G1096G1623G5610G1096G1096G4655G1909G3650G1093G2193G1766G561034The darkness lasted three hours. At three o'clock, Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"G2532G1766G5610G2424G994G3173G5456G3004G1682G1682G2982G4518G3739G2076G3177G3450G2316G3450G2316G5101G1519G1459G316535Some of the bystanders who heard him said, "Listen, he's calling for Elijah."G2532G5100G3936G191G3004G2400G5455G224336Someone ran off, soaked a sponge in sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."G1161G1520G5143G2532G1072G4699G1072G3690G5037G4060G2563G4222G846G4222G3004G863G1492G1487G2243G2064G2507G846G250737But Jesus, with a loud cry, gave his last breath.G1161G2424G863G3173G5456G160638At that moment the Temple curtain ripped right down the middle.G2532G2665G3485G4977G1519G1417G575G509G2193G273639When the Roman captain standing guard in front of him saw that he had quit breathing, he said, "This has to be the Son of God!"G1161G2760G3588G3936G1537G1727G846G1492G3754G3779G2896G1606G2036G230G3778G444G2258G5207G2316

Taken to a Tomb

40There were women watching from a distance, among them Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and Joses, and Salome.G1161G2258G2532G1135G2334G3113G575G2532G1722G3739G2258G3137G3094G2532G3137G3384G2385G3398G2532G2500G2532G453941When Jesus was in Galilee, these women followed and served him, and had come up with him to Jerusalem.G3739G2532G3753G2258G1722G1056G190G846G2532G1247G846G2532G4183G243G3588G4872G846G1519G241442Late in the afternoon, since it was the Day of Preparation (that is, Sabbath eve),G2532G2235G3798G1096G1893G2258G3904G3603G2076G431543Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Jewish Council, came. He was one who lived expectantly, on the lookout for the kingdom of God. Working up his courage, he went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.G2501G575G707G2158G1010G3739G2532G846G4327G2258G932G2316G2064G1525G5111G4314G4091G2532G154G4983G242444Pilate questioned whether he could be dead that soon and called for the captain to verify that he was really dead.G1161G4091G2296G1487G2348G2235G2348G2532G4341G2760G1905G846G1487G599G3819G59945Assured by the captain, he gave Joseph the corpse.G2532G1097G575G2760G1433G4983G250146Having already purchased a linen shroud, Joseph took him down, wrapped him in the shroud, placed him in a tomb that had been cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the opening.G2532G59G4616G2532G2507G1750G846G4616G2532G2698G846G1722G3419G3739G2258G2998G1537G4073G2532G4351G3037G1909G2374G341947Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Joses, watched the burial.G1161G3137G3094G2532G3137G2500G2334G4226G5087

The Resurrection

16When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could embalm him.G2532G1230G4521G1230G3137G3094G2532G3137G3588G2385G2532G4539G59G759G2443G2064G218G8462Very early on Sunday morning, as the sun rose, they went to the tomb.G2532G3029G4404G3391G4521G2064G1909G3419G393G22463They worried out loud to each other, "Who will roll back the stone from the tomb for us?"G2532G3004G4314G1438G5101G617G2254G617G3037G1537G2374G34194Then they looked up, saw that it had been rolled back—it was a huge stone—and walked right in.G2532G308G2334G3754G3037G617G1063G2258G4970G31735They saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed all in white. They were completely taken aback, astonished.G2532G1525G1519G3419G1492G3495G2521G1722G1188G4016G3022G4749G2532G15686He said, "Don't be afraid. I know you're looking for Jesus the Nazarene, the One they nailed on the cross. He's been raised up; he's here no longer. You can see for yourselves that the place is empty.G1161G3004G846G1568G3361G1568G2212G2424G3479G3588G4717G1453G2076G3756G5602G2396G5117G3699G5087G8467Now—on your way. Tell his disciples and Peter that he is going on ahead of you to Galilee. You'll see him there, exactly as he said."G235G5217G2036G846G3101G2532G4074G3754G4254G5209G1519G1056G1563G3700G846G2531G2036G52138They got out as fast as they could, beside themselves, their heads swimming. Stunned, they said nothing to anyone.G2532G1831G5035G5343G575G3419G1161G846G2192G5156G2532G1611G2532G2036G3762G3762G1063G53999[After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared early on Sunday morning to Mary Magdalene, whom he had delivered from seven demons.G1161G450G4404G4413G4521G5316G4412G3137G3094G575G3739G1544G2033G114010She went to his former companions, now weeping and carrying on, and told them.G1565G4198G518G1096G3326G846G3996G2532G279911When they heard her report that she had seen him alive and well, they didn't believe her.G2548G191G3754G2198G2532G2300G5259G846G56912Later he appeared, but in a different form, to two of them out walking in the countryside.G1161G3326G5023G5319G1722G2087G3444G1417G1537G846G4043G4198G1519G6813They went back and told the rest, but they weren't believed either.G2548G565G518G3062G3761G4100G156514Still later, as the Eleven were eating supper, he appeared and took them to task most severely for their stubborn unbelief, refusing to believe those who had seen him raised up.G5305G5319G1733G846G345G2532G3679G846G570G2532G4641G3754G4100G3756G2300G846G145315Then he said, "Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God's good news to one and all.G2532G2036G846G4198G1519G537G2889G2784G2098G3956G293716Whoever believes and is baptized is saved; whoever refuses to believe is damned.G4100G2532G907G4982G1161G569G263217"These are some of the signs that will accompany believers: They will throw out demons in my name, they will speak in new tongues,G1161G5023G4592G3877G4100G1722G3450G3686G1544G1140G2980G2537G110018they will take snakes in their hands, they will drink poison and not be hurt, they will lay hands on the sick and make them well."G142G3789G2579G4095G5100G2286G5100G3364G984G846G2007G5495G1909G732G2532G2192G257319Then the Master Jesus, after briefing them, was taken up to heaven, and he sat down beside God in the place of honor.G3303G3767G3326G2962G2980G846G353G1519G3772G2532G2523G1537G1188G231620And the disciples went everywhere preaching, the Master working right with them, validating the Message with indisputable evidence.]G1161G1565G1831G2784G3837G2962G4903G2532G950G3056G1223G4592G1872G281

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
