Anointed for Burial

26When Jesus finished saying these things, he told his disciples,G2532G1096G3753G2424G5055G3956G5128G3056G2036G846G3101 2"You know that Passover comes in two days. That's when the Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over for crucifixion."G1492G3754G3326G1417G2250G1096G3957G2532G5207G444G3860G1519G4717 3At that very moment, the party of high priests and religious leaders was meeting in the chambers of the Chief Priest named Caiaphas,G5119G4863G749G2532G1122G2532G4245G2992G1519G833G749G3588G3004G2533 4conspiring to seize Jesus by stealth and kill him.G2532G4823G2443G2902G2424G1388G2532G615 5They agreed that it should not be done during Passover Week. "We don't want a riot on our hands," they said.G1161G3004G3361G1722G1859G3363G1096G2351G1722G2992 6When Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper,G1161G2424G1096G1722G963G1722G3614G4613G3015 7a woman came up to him as he was eating dinner and anointed him with a bottle of very expensive perfume.G4334G846G1135G2192G211G927G3464G2532G2708G1909G846G2776G345 8When the disciples saw what was happening, they were furious. "That's criminal!G1161G846G3101G1492G23G3004G1519G5101G3778G684 9This could have been sold for a lot and the money handed out to the poor."G1063G5124G3464G1410G4097G4183G2532G1325G4434 10When Jesus realized what was going on, he intervened. "Why are you giving this woman a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me.G1161G2424G1097G2036G846G5101G2873G3930G1135G1063G2038G2570G2041G1519G1691 11You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives, but not me.G1063G2192G4434G3842G3326G1438G1161G1691G2192G3756G3842 12When she poured this perfume on my body, what she really did was anoint me for burial.G1063G3778G846G906G5124G3464G1909G3450G4983G4160G4314G3165G1779 13You can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is preached, what she has just done is going to be remembered and admired."G281G3004G5213G3699G1437G5124G2098G2784G1722G3650G2889G2532G3739G3778G846G4160G2980G1519G3422G846 14That is when one of the Twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the cabal of high priestsG5119G1520G1427G3004G2455G2469G4198G4314G749 15and said, "What will you give me if I hand him over to you?" They settled on thirty silver pieces.G2036G5101G2309G1325G3427G2504G3860G846G5213G1161G2476G846G5144G694 16He began looking for just the right moment to hand him over.G2532G575G5119G2212G2120G2443G3860G846

The Traitor

17On the first of the Days of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare your Passover meal?"G1161G4413G106G3101G4334G2424G3004G846G4226G2309G2090G4671G5315G3957 18He said, "Enter the city. Go up to a certain man and say, 'The Teacher says, My time is near. I and my disciples plan to celebrate the Passover meal at your house.'"G1161G2036G5217G1519G4172G4314G1170G2532G2036G846G1320G3004G3450G2540G2076G1451G4160G3957G4314G4571G3326G3450G3101 19The disciples followed Jesus' instructions to the letter, and prepared the Passover meal.G2532G3101G4160G5613G2424G4929G846G2532G2090G3957 20After sunset, he and the Twelve were sitting around the table.G1161G3798G1096G345G3326G1427 21During the meal, he said, "I have something hard but important to say to you: One of you is going to hand me over to the conspirators."G2532G846G2068G2036G281G3004G5213G3754G1520G1537G5216G3860G3165 22They were stunned, and then began to ask, one after another, "It isn't me, is it, Master?"G2532G4970G3076G756G1538G846G3004G846G2962G1510G3385G1473 23Jesus answered, "The one who hands me over is someone I eat with daily, one who passes me food at the table.G1161G611G2036G1686G5495G3326G1700G1722G5165G3778G3860G3165 24In one sense the Son of Man is entering into a way of treachery well-marked by the Scriptures—no surprises here. In another sense that man who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man—better never to have been born than do this!"G3303G5207G444G5217G2531G1125G4012G846G1161G3759G1565G444G1223G3739G5207G444G3860G2258G2570G1565G846G1487G444G1080G3756G1080 25Then Judas, already turned traitor, said, "It isn't me, is it, Rabbi?" Jesus said, "Don't play games with me, Judas."G1161G2455G3588G3860G846G611G2036G4461G1510G3385G1473G3004G846G4771G2036

The Bread and the Cup

26During the meal, Jesus took and blessed the bread, broke it, and gave it to his disciples: Take, eat. This is my body.G1161G846G2068G2424G2983G740G2532G2127G2806G2532G1325G3101G2532G2036G2983G5315G5124G2076G3450G4983 27Taking the cup and thanking God, he gave it to them: Drink this, all of you.G2532G2983G4221G2532G2168G1325G846G3004G4095G3956G1537G846 28This is my blood, God's new covenant poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins.G1063G5124G2076G3450G129G2537G1242G3588G1632G4012G4183G1519G859G266 29"I'll not be drinking wine from this cup again until that new day when I'll drink with you in the kingdom of my Father."G1161G3004G5213G4095G3754G3364G4095G575G737G1537G5127G1081G288G2193G1565G2250G3752G4095G846G2537G3326G5216G1722G3450G3962G932 30They sang a hymn and went directly to Mount Olives.G2532G5214G1831G1519G3735G1636

Gethsemane

31Then Jesus told them, "Before the night's over, you're going to fall to pieces because of what happens to me. There is a Scripture that says, I'll strike the shepherd; helter-skelter the sheep will be scattered.G5119G3004G2424G846G3956G5210G4624G1722G1722G1698G5026G3571G1063G1125G3960G4166G2532G4263G4167G1287 32But after I am raised up, I, your Shepherd, will go ahead of you, leading the way to Galilee."G1161G3326G3165G1453G4254G5209G1519G1056 33Peter broke in, "Even if everyone else falls to pieces on account of you, I won't."G4074G611G1161G2036G846G1499G3956G4624G1722G4671G1473G3763G4624 34"Don't be so sure," Jesus said. "This very night, before the rooster crows up the dawn, you will deny me three times."G2424G5346G846G281G3004G4671G3754G1722G5026G3571G4250G220G5455G533G3165G5151 35Peter protested, "Even if I had to die with you, I would never deny you." All the others said the same thing.G4074G3004G846G2579G3165G1163G599G4862G4671G3364G533G3364G533G4571G3668G2532G2036G3956G3101 36Then Jesus went with them to a garden called Gethsemane and told his disciples, "Stay here while I go over there and pray."G5119G2064G2424G3326G846G1519G5564G3004G1068G2532G3004G3101G2523G847G2193G3739G565G4336G1563 37Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he plunged into an agonizing sorrow.G2532G3880G4074G2532G1417G5207G2199G756G3076G2532G85 38Then he said, "This sorrow is crushing my life out. Stay here and keep vigil with me."G5119G3004G846G3450G5590G2076G4036G2193G2288G3306G5602G2532G1127G3326G1700 39Going a little ahead, he fell on his face, praying, "My Father, if there is any way, get me out of this. But please, not what I want. You, what do you want?"G2532G4281G3397G4281G4098G1909G846G4383G2532G4336G3004G3450G3962G1487G2076G1415G3928G5124G4221G3928G575G1700G4133G3756G5613G1473G2309G235G5613G4771 40When he came back to his disciples, he found them sound asleep. He said to Peter, "Can't you stick it out with me a single hour?G2532G2064G4314G3101G2532G2147G846G2518G2532G3004G4074G3779G2480G3756G1127G3326G1700G3391G5610 41Stay alert; be in prayer so you don't wander into temptation without even knowing you're in danger. There is a part of you that is eager, ready for anything in God. But there's another part that's as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire."G1127G2532G4336G3363G1525G3363G1519G3986G4151G3303G4289G1161G4561G772 42He then left them a second time. Again he prayed, "My Father, if there is no other way than this, drinking this cup to the dregs, I'm ready. Do it your way."G565G3825G1537G1208G4336G3004G3450G3962G1487G5124G4221G1410G3756G3928G575G1700G3362G4095G846G4675G2307G1096 43When he came back, he again found them sound asleep. They simply couldn't keep their eyes open.G2532G2064G2147G846G2518G3825G1063G846G3788G2258G916 44This time he let them sleep on, and went back a third time to pray, going over the same ground one last time.G2532G863G846G565G3825G4336G1537G5154G2036G846G3056 45When he came back the next time, he said, "Are you going to sleep on and make a night of it? My time is up, the Son of Man is about to be handed over to the hands of sinners.G5119G2064G4314G846G3101G2532G3004G846G2518G3063G2532G373G2400G5610G1448G2532G5207G444G3860G1519G5495G268 46Get up! Let's get going! My betrayer is here."G1453G71G2400G1448G3860G3165

With Swords and Clubs

47The words were barely out of his mouth when Judas (the one from the Twelve) showed up, and with him a gang from the high priests and religious leaders brandishing swords and clubs.G2532G2089G846G2089G2980G2400G2455G1520G1427G2064G2532G3326G846G4183G3793G3326G3162G2532G3586G575G749G2532G4245G2992 48The betrayer had worked out a sign with them: "The one I kiss, that's the one—seize him."G1161G3860G846G1325G846G4592G3004G3739G302G5368G846G2076G846G2902G846G2902 49He went straight to Jesus, greeted him, "How are you, Rabbi?" and kissed him.G2532G2112G4334G2424G2036G5463G4461G2532G2705G846 50Jesus said, "Friend, why this charade?" Then they came on him—grabbed him and roughed him up.G1161G2424G2036G846G2083G1909G3739G3918G5119G4334G1911G5495G1909G2424G2532G2902G846 51One of those with Jesus pulled his sword and, taking a swing at the Chief Priest's servant, cut off his ear.G2532G2400G1520G3326G2424G1614G5495G645G846G3162G2532G3960G1401G749G851G846G5621 52Jesus said, "Put your sword back where it belongs. All who use swords are destroyed by swords.G5119G3004G2424G846G654G4675G3162G1519G846G5117G1063G3956G2983G3162G622G1722G3162 53Don't you realize that I am able right now to call to my Father, and twelve companies—more, if I want them—of fighting angels would be here, battle-ready?G2228G1380G3754G3756G1410G737G3870G3450G3962G2532G3936G3427G4119G2228G1427G3003G32 54But if I did that, how would the Scriptures come true that say this is the way it has to be?"G4459G3767G1124G4137G3754G3779G1163G1096 55Then Jesus addressed the mob: "What is this—coming out after me with swords and clubs as if I were a dangerous criminal? Day after day I have been sitting in the Temple teaching, and you never so much as lifted a hand against me.G1722G1565G5610G2036G2424G3793G1831G5613G1909G3027G3326G3162G2532G3586G4815G3165G2516G2250G2596G4314G5209G1321G1722G2411G2532G2902G3756G2902G3165 56You've done it this way to confirm and fulfill the prophetic writings." Then all the disciples cut and ran.G1161G3650G5124G1096G2443G1124G4396G4137G5119G3956G3101G863G846G5343

False Charges

57The gang that had seized Jesus led him before Caiaphas the Chief Priest, where the religion scholars and leaders had assembled.G1161G2902G2424G520G4314G2533G749G3699G1122G2532G4245G4863 58Peter followed at a safe distance until they got to the Chief Priest's courtyard. Then he slipped in and mingled with the servants, watching to see how things would turn out.G1161G4074G190G846G575G3113G2193G749G833G2532G1525G2080G2521G3326G5257G1492G5056 59The high priests, conspiring with the Jewish Council, tried to cook up charges against Jesus in order to sentence him to death.G1161G749G2532G4245G2532G3650G4892G2212G5577G2596G2424G3704G2289G846G2289 60But even though many stepped up, making up one false accusation after another, nothing was believable. Finally two men came forwardG2532G2147G3756G2532G4183G5575G4334G2147G3756G1161G5305G4334G1417G5575 61with this: "He said, 'I can tear down this Temple of God and after three days rebuild it.'"G2036G3778G5346G1410G2647G3485G2316G2532G3618G846G1223G5140G2250 62The Chief Priest stood up and said, "What do you have to say to the accusation?"G2532G749G450G2036G846G611G3762G5101G3778G2649G4675 63Jesus kept silent. Then the Chief Priest said, "I command you by the authority of the living God to say if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."G1161G2424G4623G2532G749G611G2036G846G1844G4571G2596G2198G2316G2443G2036G2254G1487G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316 64Jesus was curt: "You yourself said it. And that's not all. Soon you'll see it for yourself: The Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Mighty One, Arriving on the clouds of heaven."G2424G3004G846G4771G2036G4133G3004G5213G737G575G3700G5207G444G2521G1537G1188G1411G2532G2064G1909G3507G3772 65At that, the Chief Priest lost his temper, ripping his robes, yelling, "He blasphemed! Why do we need witnesses to accuse him? You all heard him blaspheme!G5119G749G1284G846G2440G3004G3754G987G5101G2089G5532G2192G3144G2396G3568G191G846G988 66Are you going to stand for such blasphemy?" They all said, "Death! That seals his death sentence."G5101G1380G5213G611G1161G2036G2076G1777G2288 67Then they were spitting in his face and banging him around. They jeered as they slapped him:G5119G1716G1519G846G4383G2532G2852G846G1161G4474 68"Prophesy, Messiah: Who hit you that time?"G3004G4395G2254G5547G5101G2076G3817G4571

Denial in the Courtyard

69All this time, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard. One servant girl came up to him and said, "You were with Jesus the Galilean."G1161G4074G2521G1854G1722G833G2532G3391G3814G4334G846G3004G4771G2532G2258G3326G2424G1057 70In front of everybody there, he denied it. "I don't know what you're talking about."G1161G720G1715G3956G3004G1492G3756G5101G3004 71As he moved over toward the gate, someone else said to the people there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene."G1161G846G1831G1519G4440G243G1492G846G2532G3004G1563G3778G2258G2532G3326G2424G3480 72Again he denied it, salting his denial with an oath: "I swear, I never laid eyes on the man."G2532G3825G720G3326G3727G3754G1492G3756G1492G444 73Shortly after that, some bystanders approached Peter. "You've got to be one of them. Your accent gives you away."G1161G3326G3397G4334G2476G2036G4074G230G4771G2532G1488G1537G846G1063G2532G4675G2981G1212G4571G4160 74Then he got really nervous and swore. "I don't know the man!" Just then a rooster crowed.G5119G756G2653G2532G3660G3754G1492G3756G444G2532G2112G220G5455 75Peter remembered what Jesus had said: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." He went out and cried and cried and cried.G2532G4074G3415G4487G2424G3588G2046G846G3754G4250G220G5455G533G3165G5151G2532G1854G1831G2799G4090
