1Chronicles 19

19In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king.H310H5176H4428H1121H5983H4191H1121H44272David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David's men came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him,H1732H559H6213H2617H2586H1121H5176H1H6213H2617H1732H7971H4397H5162H1H5650H1732H935H776H1121H5983H2586H51623the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending men to you to express sympathy? Haven't his men come to you to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?"H8269H1121H5983H559H2586H5869H1732H3513H1H7971H5162H5650H935H2713H2015H7270H7764So Hanun seized David's men, shaved them, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away.H2586H3947H1732H5650H1548H3772H4063H2677H4667H79715When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, "Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back."H3212H5046H1732H582H7971H7125H582H3966H3637H4428H559H3427H3405H2206H6779H77256When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench in David's nostrils, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah.H1121H5983H7200H887H1732H2586H1121H5983H7971H505H3603H3701H7936H7393H6571H763H758H4601H66787They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle.H7936H7970H8147H505H7393H4428H4601H5971H935H2583H6440H4311H1121H5983H622H5892H935H44218On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men.H1732H8085H7971H3097H6635H13689The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.H1121H5983H3318H4421H6186H6607H5892H4428H935H770410Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans.H3097H7200H4421H6440H268H977H977H3478H6186H7125H75811He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites.H3499H5971H5414H3027H52H251H6186H7125H1121H598312Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you.H559H758H2388H8668H1121H5983H2388H346713Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight."H2388H2388H5971H5892H430H3068H6213H2896H586914Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him.H3097H5971H5066H6440H758H4421H5127H644015When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.H1121H5983H7200H758H5127H5127H6440H52H251H935H5892H3097H935H338916After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the River, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them.H758H7200H5062H6440H3478H7971H4397H3318H758H5676H5104H7780H8269H6635H1928H644017When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him.H5046H1732H622H3478H5674H3383H935H6186H1732H4421H6186H7125H758H389818But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.H758H5127H6440H3478H1732H2026H758H7651H505H7393H705H505H376H7273H4191H7780H8269H663519When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore.H5650H1928H7200H5062H6440H3478H7999H1732H5647H14H758H3467H1121H5983

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
