The Cities of Refuge

20The LORD said to Joshua,H3068H1696H3091H559 2"Now tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed Moses.H1696H1121H3478H559H5414H5892H4733H1696H3027H4872 3Anyone who kills another person accidentally and unintentionally can run to one of these cities; they will be places of refuge from relatives seeking revenge for the person who was killed.H7523H5221H5315H7684H1847H5127H4733H1350H1818 4"Upon reaching one of these cities, the one who caused the death will appear before the elders at the city gate and present his case. They must allow him to enter the city and give him a place to live among them.H5127H259H5892H5975H6607H8179H5892H1696H1697H241H2205H5892H622H5892H5414H4725H3427 5If the relatives of the victim come to avenge the killing, the leaders must not release the slayer to them, for he killed the other person unintentionally and without previous hostility.H1350H1818H7291H310H5462H7523H3027H5221H7453H1097H1847H8130H8543H8032 6But the slayer must stay in that city and be tried by the local assembly, which will render a judgment. And he must continue to live in that city until the death of the high priest who was in office at the time of the accident. After that, he is free to return to his own home in the town from which he fled."H3427H5892H5975H6440H5712H4941H4194H1419H3548H834H3117H7523H7725H935H5892H1004H5892H5127 7The following cities were designated as cities of refuge: Kedesh of Galilee, in the hill country of Naphtali; Shechem, in the hill country of Ephraim; and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), in the hill country of Judah.H6942H6943H1551H2022H5321H7927H2022H669H7153H2275H2022H3063 8On the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho, the following cities were designated: Bezer, in the wilderness plain of the tribe of Reuben; Ramoth in Gilead, in the territory of the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, in the land of the tribe of Manasseh.H5676H3383H3405H4217H5414H1221H4057H4334H4294H7205H7216H1568H4294H1410H1474H1316H4294H4519 9These cities were set apart for all the Israelites as well as the foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the local assembly.H5892H4152H1121H3478H1616H1481H8432H5221H5315H7684H5127H4191H3027H1350H1818H5975H6440H5712
