Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

18After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.G2424G2036G5023G1831G4862G846G3101G4008G5493G2748G3699G2258G2779G1519G3739G846G1525G2532G846G3101 2Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G1492G5117G3754G2424G4178G4863G1563G3326G846G3101 3The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.G2455G3767G2983G4686G2532G5257G1537G749G2532G5330G2064G1563G3326G5322G2532G2985G2532G3696 4Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" he asked.G2424G3767G1492G3956G2064G1909G846G1831G2036G846G5101G2212 5"Jesus the Nazarene," they replied. "I AM he," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)G611G846G2424G3480G2424G3004G846G1473G1510G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G2476G3326G846 6As Jesus said "I AM he," they all drew back and fell to the ground!G5613G3767G2036G846G3754G1473G1510G565G1519G3694G2532G4098G5476 7Once more he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" And again they replied, "Jesus the Nazarene."G3767G1905G846G3825G5101G2212G1161G2036G2424G3480 8"I told you that I AM he," Jesus said. "And since I am the one you want, let these others go."G2424G611G2036G5213G3754G1473G1510G1487G3767G2212G1691G863G5128G5217 9He did this to fulfill his own statement: "I did not lose a single one of those you have given me."G2443G3056G4137G3739G2036G3754G1537G846G3739G1325G3427G3756G622G3762 10Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's slave.G3767G4613G4074G2192G3162G1670G846G2532G3817G749G1401G2532G609G846G1188G5621G1161G1401G3686G2258G3124 11But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?"G3767G2036G2424G4074G906G4675G3162G1519G2336G4221G3739G3962G1325G3427G4095G3378G4095G846

Jesus at the High Priest’s House

12So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.G3767G4686G2532G5506G2532G5257G2453G4815G2424G2532G1210G846 13First they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.G2532G520G846G520G4314G452G4412G1063G2258G3995G2533G3739G2258G749G1565G1763 14Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, "It's better that one man should die for the people."G1161G2533G2258G3588G4823G2453G3754G4851G1520G444G622G5228G2992

Peter’s First Denial

15Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus.G1161G4613G4074G190G2424G2532G243G3101G1161G1565G3101G2258G1110G749G2532G4897G2424G1519G833G749 16Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.G1161G4074G2476G4314G2374G1854G3767G1831G243G3101G3739G2258G1110G749G2532G2036G2377G2532G1521G4074 17The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?" "No," he said, "I am not."G3767G3004G3814G2377G4074G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G5127G444G3101G1565G3004G1510G3756 18Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.G1161G1401G2532G5257G2476G4160G439G3754G2258G5592G2532G2328G1161G4074G2258G2476G3326G846G2532G2328

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.G749G3767G2065G2424G4012G846G3101G2532G4012G846G1322 20Jesus replied, "Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret.G2424G611G846G1473G2980G3954G2889G1473G3842G1321G1722G4864G2532G1722G2411G3699G2453G3842G4905G2532G1722G2927G2980G3762 21Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said."G5101G1905G3165G1905G191G5101G2980G846G2396G3778G1492G3739G1473G2036 22Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded.G1161G846G2036G5023G2036G1520G5257G3936G1325G4475G2424G1325G4475G2036G611G749G3779 23Jesus replied, "If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?"G2424G611G846G1487G2980G2560G3140G4012G2556G1161G1487G2573G5101G1194G3165 24Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.G452G649G846G1210G4314G2533G749

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, "You're not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "No, I am not."G1161G4613G4074G2258G2476G2532G2328G2036G3767G846G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G846G3101G1565G720G2532G2036G1510G3756 26But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?"G1520G1537G1401G749G5607G4773G3739G5621G4074G609G3004G1492G3756G1473G1492G4571G1722G2779G3326G846 27Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.G4074G3767G720G3825G2532G2112G220G5455

Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

28Jesus' trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor. His accusers didn't go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn't be allowed to celebrate the Passover.G3767G71G2424G575G2533G1519G4232G1161G2258G4405G2532G846G1525G3756G1519G4232G3363G3392G235G2443G5315G3957 29So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, "What is your charge against this man?"G4091G3767G1831G4314G846G2532G2036G5101G2724G5342G2596G5127G444 30"We wouldn't have handed him over to you if he weren't a criminal!" they retorted.G611G2532G2036G846G1508G3778G2258G1508G2555G302G3756G3860G846G3860G4671 31"Then take him away and judge him by your own law," Pilate told them. "Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone," the Jewish leaders replied.G3767G2036G4091G846G2983G5210G846G2532G2919G846G2596G5216G3551G2453G3767G2036G846G1832G3756G1832G2254G615G3762G615 32(This fulfilled Jesus' prediction about the way he would die.)G2443G3056G2424G4137G3739G2036G4591G4169G2288G3195G599 33Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. "Are you the king of the Jews?" he asked him.G3767G4091G1525G1519G4232G3825G2532G5455G2424G2532G2036G846G1488G4771G935G2453 34Jesus replied, "Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?"G2424G611G846G3004G4771G5124G575G1438G2228G243G2036G4671G4012G1700 35"Am I a Jew?" Pilate retorted. "Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?"G4091G611G3385G1510G1473G2453G4674G1484G2532G749G3860G4571G1698G5101G4160 36Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world."G2424G611G1699G932G2076G3756G1537G5127G2889G1487G1699G932G2258G1537G5127G2889G302G1699G5257G75G3363G3860G3363G3860G2453G1161G3568G2076G1699G932G3756G1782 37Pilate said, "So you are a king?" Jesus responded, "You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true."G4091G3767G2036G846G1488G4771G935G3766G2424G611G4771G3004G3754G1473G1510G935G1519G5124G1080G1473G1080G2532G1519G5124G2064G1519G2889G2443G3140G225G3956G5607G1537G225G191G3450G5456 38"What is truth?" Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, "He is not guilty of any crime.G4091G3004G846G5101G2076G225G2532G2036G5124G1831G3825G4314G2453G2532G3004G846G1473G2147G1722G846G3762G156 39But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this 'King of the Jews'?"G1161G5213G2076G4914G2443G630G5213G1520G1722G3957G1014G3767G630G5213G935G2453 40But they shouted back, "No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!"
