Jesus and His Brothers

7After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.G2532G3326G5023G2424G4043G1722G1056G1063G2309G3756G4043G1722G2449G3754G2453G2212G615G846 2But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters,G1161G2453G1859G4634G2258G1451 3and Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles!G846G80G3767G2036G4314G846G3327G1782G2532G5217G1519G2449G2443G4675G3101G2532G2334G2041G3739G4675G4160 4You can't become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!"G1063G3762G4160G5100G1722G2927G2532G846G2212G1511G1722G3954G1487G4160G5023G5319G4572G2889 5For even his brothers didn't believe in him.G1063G3761G4100G846G80G4100G1519G846 6Jesus replied, "Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.G3767G2424G3004G846G1699G2540G3918G3768G3918G1161G5212G2540G2076G3842G2092 7The world can't hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil.G2889G3756G1410G3404G5209G1161G1691G3404G3754G1473G3140G4012G846G3754G2041G846G2076G4190 8You go on. I'm not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come."G305G5210G305G1519G5026G1859G1473G305G3768G305G3768G1519G5026G1859G3754G1699G2540G4137G3768G4137 9After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee.G1161G2036G5023G846G3306G1722G1056

Jesus Teaches Openly at the Temple

10But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view.G1161G5613G846G80G305G5119G305G846G2532G305G1519G1859G3756G5320G235G5613G1722G2927 11The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.G3767G2453G2212G846G1722G1859G2532G3004G4226G2076G1565 12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some argued, "He's a good man," but others said, "He's nothing but a fraud who deceives the people."G2532G2258G4183G1112G1722G3793G4012G846G3303G3004G3754G2076G18G1161G243G3004G3756G235G4105G3793 13But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.G3305G3762G2980G3954G4012G846G1223G5401G2453 14Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began to teach.G2235G1161G3322G1859G2424G305G1519G2411G2532G1321 15The people were surprised when they heard him. "How does he know so much when he hasn't been trained?" they asked.G2532G2453G2296G3004G4459G1492G3778G1121G3129G3361G3129 16So Jesus told them, "My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me.G2424G611G846G2532G2036G1699G1322G2076G3756G1699G235G3992G3165 17Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.G1437G5100G2309G4160G846G2307G1097G4012G1322G4220G2076G1537G2316G2228G1473G2980G575G1683 18Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.G2980G575G1438G2212G2398G1391G1161G2212G1391G3992G846G3778G2076G227G2532G3756G93G2076G1722G846 19Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me."G1325G3756G3475G1325G5213G3551G2532G3762G1537G5216G4160G3551G5101G2212G615G3165 20The crowd replied, "You're demon possessed! Who's trying to kill you?"G3793G611G2532G2036G2192G1140G5101G2212G615G4571 21Jesus replied, "I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed.G2424G611G2532G2036G846G4160G1520G2041G2532G2296G3956G2296 22But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses' law of circumcision. G3475G1223G5124G1325G5213G4061G3756G3754G2076G1537G3475G235G1537G3962G2532G4059G1722G4521G4059G444 23For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath?G1487G444G1722G4521G2983G4061G3363G3551G3475G3089G3363G3089G5520G1698G3754G4160G444G3650G5199G1722G4521 24Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly."G2919G3361G2596G3799G235G2919G1342G2920

Is Jesus the Messiah?

25Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?G3767G3004G5100G1537G2415G2076G3756G3778G3739G2212G615 26But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?G2532G2396G2980G3954G2532G3004G3762G846G1097G758G1097G3379G230G3754G3778G2076G230G5547 27But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from."G235G1492G5126G4159G2076G1161G3752G5547G2064G3762G1097G4159G2076 28While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I'm not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don't know him.G3767G2896G2424G1722G2411G1321G2532G3004G2504G1492G2532G1492G4159G1510G2532G2064G3756G2064G575G1683G235G3992G3165G2076G228G3739G5210G1492G3756 29But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you."G1161G1473G1492G846G3754G1510G3844G846G2548G649G3165 30Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.G3767G2212G4084G846G2532G3762G1911G5495G1909G846G3754G846G5610G2064G3768G2064 31Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. "After all," they said, "would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?"G1161G4183G1537G3793G4100G1519G846G2532G3004G3754G3752G5547G2064G3385G4160G4119G4592G5130G3739G3778G4160 32When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus.G5330G191G3793G1111G5023G4012G846G2532G5330G2532G749G649G5257G2443G4084G846 33But Jesus told them, "I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me.G3767G2036G2424G846G2089G3398G5550G1510G3326G5216G2532G5217G4314G3992G3165 34You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going."G2212G3165G2532G2147G3756G2147G2532G3699G1473G1510G5210G3756G1410G2064 35The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. "Where is he planning to go?" they asked. "Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks!G3767G2036G2453G4314G1438G4226G3195G3778G4198G3754G2249G2147G3756G2147G846G3361G3195G4198G1519G1290G1672G2532G1321G1672 36What does he mean when he says, 'You will search for me but not find me,' and 'You cannot go where I am going'?"G5101G3056G2076G3778G3739G2036G2212G3165G2532G2147G3756G2147G2532G3699G1473G1510G5210G3756G1410G2064

Jesus Promises Living Water

37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!G1161G1722G2078G2250G3173G1859G2424G2476G2532G2896G3004G1437G5100G1372G2064G4314G3165G2532G4095 38Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'"G4100G1519G1691G2531G1124G2036G1537G846G2836G4482G4215G2198G5204 39(When he said "living water," he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)G1161G5124G2036G4012G4151G3739G4100G1519G846G3195G2983G1063G40G4151G2258G3768G3754G2424G1392G3764G1392

Division and Unbelief

40When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, "Surely this man is the Prophet we've been expecting."G4183G1537G3793G3767G191G3056G3004G230G3778G2076G4396 41Others said, "He is the Messiah." Still others said, "But he can't be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?G243G3004G3778G2076G5547G1161G243G3004G1063G3361G5547G2064G1537G1056 42For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born."G3780G1124G2036G3754G5547G2064G1537G4690G1138G2532G575G2968G965G3699G1138G2258 43So the crowd was divided about him.G3767G1096G4978G1722G3793G1223G846 44Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.G1161G5100G1537G846G2309G4084G846G235G3762G1911G5495G1909G846 45When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, "Why didn't you bring him in?"G3767G2064G5257G4314G749G2532G5330G2532G1565G2036G846G1302G71G3756G71G846 46"We have never heard anyone speak like this!" the guards responded.G5257G611G3763G444G3779G2980G5613G3778G444 47"Have you been led astray, too?" the Pharisees mocked.G3767G611G846G5330G4105G5210G2532G4105G3361 48"Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?G3387G1537G758G2228G1537G5330G4100G1519G846 49This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God's curse is on them!"G235G3778G3793G3588G1097G3361G3551G1526G1944 50Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up.G3530G3004G4314G846G2064G846G4314G3571G5607G1520G1537G846 51"Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?" he asked.G2919G2257G3551G2919G3361G444G4386G3362G191G3844G846G2532G1097G5101G4160 52They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!"G611G2532G2036G846G3361G1488G4771G2532G1537G1056G2045G2532G1492G3754G1537G1056G1453G3756G4396 53[The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7.53-8.11.] Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home.G2532G1538G4198G1519G846G3624
