Jesus Anointed at Bethany

14It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.G1161G1417G2250G2258G3957G2532G3326G106G2532G749G2532G1122G2212G4459G2902G846G1722G1388G615 2"But not during the Passover celebration," they agreed, "or the people may riot."G1161G3004G3361G1722G1859G3379G2071G2351G2992 3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.G2532G846G5607G1722G963G1722G3614G4613G3015G846G2621G2064G1135G2192G211G3464G3487G4101G4185G2532G4937G211G2708G2596G846G2776 4Some of those at the table were indignant. "Why waste such expensive perfume?" they asked.G1161G2258G5100G23G4314G1438G2532G3004G1519G5101G1096G3778G684G3464G1096 5"It could have been sold for a year's wages and the money given to the poor!" So they scolded her harshly.G1063G5124G1410G4097G1883G5145G1220G2532G1325G4434G2532G1690G846 6But Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?G1161G2424G2036G863G846G863G5101G2873G3930G846G2038G2570G2041G1519G1691 7You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.G1063G2192G4434G3326G1438G3842G2532G3752G2309G1410G4160G846G2095G1161G1691G2192G3756G3842 8She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.G4160G3739G3778G846G2192G4301G3462G3450G4983G1519G1780 9I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman's deed will be remembered and discussed."G281G3004G5213G3699G302G5124G2098G2784G1519G3650G2889G2532G3739G3778G846G4160G2980G1519G3422G846

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them.G2532G2455G2469G1520G1427G565G4314G749G2443G3860G846G846 11They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.G1161G191G5463G2532G1861G1325G846G694G2532G2212G4459G2122G3860G846

The Last Supper

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?"G2532G4413G2250G106G3753G2380G3957G846G3101G3004G846G4226G2309G565G2090G2443G5315G3957 13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: "As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.G2532G649G1417G846G3101G2532G3004G846G5217G1519G4172G2532G528G5213G444G941G2765G5204G190G846 14At the house he enters, say to the owner, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?'G2532G3699G1437G1525G2036G3617G3754G1320G3004G4226G2076G2646G3699G5315G3957G3326G3450G3101 15He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal."G2532G846G1166G5213G3173G508G4766G2092G1563G2090G2254 16So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.G2532G846G3101G1831G2532G2064G1519G4172G2532G2147G2531G2036G846G2532G2090G3957 17In the evening Jesus arrived with the twelve disciples.G2532G1096G3798G2064G3326G1427 18As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me."G2532G846G345G2532G2068G2424G2036G281G3004G5213G3754G1520G1537G5216G3588G2068G3326G1700G3860G3165 19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, "Am I the one?"G1161G756G3076G2532G3004G846G1527G3385G1473G2532G243G3385G1473 20He replied, "It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.G1161G611G2036G846G1520G1537G1427G1686G3326G1700G1519G5165 21For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!"G5207G444G3303G5217G2531G1125G4012G846G1161G3759G1565G444G1223G3739G5207G444G3860G2570G2258G1565G444G1487G846G1080G3756G1080 22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take it, for this is my body."G2532G846G2068G2424G2983G740G2127G2806G2532G1325G846G2532G2036G2983G5315G5124G2076G3450G4983 23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.G2532G2983G4221G2168G1325G846G2532G3956G4095G1537G846 24And he said to them, "This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.G2532G2036G846G5124G2076G3450G129G2537G1242G3588G1632G4012G4183 25I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God."G281G3004G5213G3364G4095G3754G3765G1537G1081G288G2193G1565G2250G3752G4095G846G2537G1722G932G2316 26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.G2532G5214G1831G1519G3735G1636

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27On the way, Jesus told them, "All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, 'God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'G2532G2424G3004G846G3754G3956G4624G1722G1722G1698G5026G3571G3754G1125G3960G4166G2532G4263G1287 28But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there."G235G3326G3165G1453G4254G5209G1519G1056 29Peter said to him, "Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will."G1161G4074G5346G846G2532G1487G3956G4624G235G3756G1473 30Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me."G2532G2424G3004G846G281G3004G4671G3754G4594G1722G5026G3571G4250G2228G220G5455G1364G533G3165G5151 31"No!" Peter declared emphatically. "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the others vowed the same.G1161G3004G3123G1537G4053G1437G3165G1163G4880G4671G3364G533G4571G3364G5615G1161G2532G3004G3956

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, "Sit here while I go and pray."G2532G2064G1519G5564G3739G3686G1068G2532G3004G846G3101G2523G5602G2193G4336 33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.G2532G3880G3326G1438G4074G2532G2385G2532G2491G2532G756G1568G2532G85 34He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."G2532G3004G846G3450G5590G2076G4036G2193G2288G3306G5602G2532G1127 35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.G2532G4281G3397G4098G1909G1093G2532G4336G2443G1487G2076G1415G5610G3928G575G846 36"Abba, Father," he cried out, "everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine."G2532G3004G5G3962G3956G1415G4671G3911G5124G4221G575G1700G235G3756G5101G1473G2309G235G5101G4771 37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Couldn't you watch with me even one hour?G2532G2064G2532G2147G846G2518G2532G3004G4074G4613G2518G2480G3756G1127G3391G5610 38Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak."G1127G2532G4336G3363G1525G1519G3986G4151G3303G4289G1161G4561G772 39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.G2532G3825G565G4336G2036G846G3056 40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn't keep their eyes open. And they didn't know what to say.G2532G5290G2147G846G2518G3825G1063G846G3788G2258G916G2532G3756G1492G5101G611G846 41When he returned to them the third time, he said, "Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.G2532G2064G5154G2532G3004G846G2518G3063G2532G373G566G5610G2064G2400G5207G444G3860G1519G5495G268 42Up, let's be going. Look, my betrayer is here!"G1453G71G2400G3860G3165G1448

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.G2532G2112G846G2089G2980G3854G2455G1520G5607G1427G2532G3326G846G4183G3793G3326G3162G2532G3586G3844G749G2532G1122G2532G4245 44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: "You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard."G1161G3860G846G1325G846G4953G3004G3739G302G5368G846G2076G2902G846G2532G520G806 45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. "Rabbi!" he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.G2532G2064G4334G2112G846G3004G4461G4461G2532G2705G846 46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.G1161G1911G846G5495G1909G846G2532G2902G846 47But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest's slave, slashing off his ear.G1161G5100G1520G3936G4685G3162G3817G1401G749G2532G851G846G5621 48Jesus asked them, "Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?G2532G2424G611G2036G846G1831G5613G1909G3027G3326G3162G2532G3586G4815G3165 49Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me."G2252G2250G2596G4314G5209G1722G2411G1321G2532G2902G3165G3756G235G1124G2443G4137 50Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.G2532G3956G863G846G5343 51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,G2532G190G846G1520G5100G3495G4616G4016G1909G1131G2532G3495G2902G846 52he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.G1161G2641G4616G5343G575G846G1131

Jesus before the Council

53They took Jesus to the high priest's home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.G2532G520G2424G520G4314G749G2532G846G4905G3956G749G2532G4245G2532G1122 54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest's courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.G2532G4074G190G846G3113G575G2193G2080G1519G833G749G2532G2258G4775G3326G5257G2532G2328G4314G5457 55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn't find any.G1161G749G2532G3650G4892G2212G3141G2596G2424G1519G2289G846G2289G2532G2147G3756 56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.G1063G4183G5576G2596G846G2532G3141G2258G2470G3756G2258 57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony.G2532G450G5100G5576G2596G846G3004 58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.'"G3754G2249G191G846G3004G3754G1473G2647G5126G3485G5499G2532G1223G5140G2250G3618G243G886 59But even then they didn't get their stories straight!G2532G3761G3779G2470G846G3141G2258G2470 60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, "Well, aren't you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?"G2532G749G450G1519G3319G1905G2424G3004G3756G611G3762G5101G3778G2649G4675 61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"G1161G4623G2532G611G3762G3825G749G1905G846G2532G3004G846G1488G4771G5547G5207G2128 62Jesus said, "I AM. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God's right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven."G1161G2424G2036G1473G1510G2532G3700G5207G444G2521G1537G1188G1411G2532G2064G3326G3507G3772 63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, "Why do we need other witnesses?G1161G749G1284G846G5509G3004G5101G5532G2192G2089G3144 64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?" "Guilty!" they all cried. "He deserves to die!"G191G988G5101G5316G5213G1161G3956G2632G846G1511G1777G2288 65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. "Prophesy to us," they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.G2532G5100G756G1716G846G2532G4028G846G4383G2532G2852G846G2532G3004G846G4395G2532G5257G906G846G4475

Peter Denies Jesus

66Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came byG2532G4074G5607G2736G1722G833G2064G3391G3814G749 67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, "You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth."G2532G1492G4074G2328G1689G846G3004G2532G4771G2532G2258G3326G2424G3479 68But Peter denied it. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.G1161G720G3004G1492G3756G3761G1987G5101G4771G3004G2532G1831G1854G1519G4259G2532G220G5455 69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, "This man is definitely one of them!"G2532G3814G1492G846G3825G756G3004G3936G3754G3778G2076G1537G846 70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, "You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean."G1161G720G3825G2532G3397G3326G3936G3004G3825G4074G230G1488G1537G846G2532G1063G1488G1057G2532G4675G2981G3662 71Peter swore, "A curse on me if I'm lying—I don't know this man you're talking about!"G1161G756G332G2532G3660G3754G1492G3756G5126G444G3739G3004 72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus' words flashed through Peter's mind: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me." And he broke down and wept.G2532G1537G1208G220G5455G2532G4074G363G4487G3739G2424G2036G846G3754G4250G220G5455G1364G533G3165G5151G2532G1911G2799
